Spotlight of the Week
Our Spotlight of the Week is about our Global Read Aloud
Each year our 5th-grade classes participate in the Global Read Aloud. This year the book was Front Desk by Kelly Yang. Mrs. Fry and Mrs.Blocker worked with the 5th-grade students during media specials to deepen their understanding of the story. This book is incredibly powerful and inspiring. We had some great discussions about the world, poverty, immigration, and love. The main character is an immigrant from China. She brought many of her family traditions to America. The 5th-grade students did some research to learn where they migrated from and their family traditions. Student made a quilt square to represent their culture and traditions. The squares were put together from both Mrs. Woronka and Miss Haley’s class. In honor of the main characters' love of the game of monopoly and to celebrate the end of a six-week book study the students played a life size board game based on the book.
Quotes from of our students:
Gavin Sibley - "I think the quilt turned out well. I notice lots of different places are from."
Kara Kemerait - "Front desk was a really good book. I loved how even though she got bullied she keep going on with her life."
Aidan Moll - "I love how the quilt represents where everyone is from."
We are so proud of our Global Quilt
