Common Sense Professional Learning Series

Common Sense Education is the nations leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. Teach students to thrive in the digital age with free, research backed lessons and resources.

Educator Session: Incorporating Digital Citizenship

As we transition back into the classroom in the fall, responsible screen use and effective tech integration in the classroom will be critical to your students’ academic success. Do you have a plan to support those efforts? Participants will leave with: practical ways to introduce digital citizenship, tips on how to engage students, and a plan for keeping digital citizenship alive all year! Join Common Sense as we share practical ways educators can incorporate digital citizenship into their teaching.

to become a Common Sense Recognized educator!

New Self-Paced Digital Citizenship Training by Common Sense!

Ready to get started teaching digital citizenship? Take the first step in preparing students for success as digital learners, leaders, and citizens. Our interactive online training will provide you with a road map to teach digital citizenship and earn your Common Sense Educator badge. At the end of the training, you'll complete a survey and receive an email confirming your course completion. This training will take approximately one hour to complete.

Simply go to Common Sense Education website

Then 'sign-in' to your FREE account to access the self-paced course. All OPS educators should have an account using their OPS email, however you may need to re-set your password if you haven't accessed your account since June. To reset your password first you click on the 'sign-in' then select 'forgot password'.

You can either go directly to the above website and sign-in into your account OR use the tile found in the Clever portal and that will prompt the sign-in page and the option for Clever to 'save password'.

What's Your Recognition Path?

The Common Sense Recognition Program provides a road map for creating a positive culture of digital learning and life. Following three steps—professional development, teaching lessons, and engaging families—this free program will help lead responsible and effective tech use in your school communities and build your practice along the way. Here is the Common Sense Educator Recognition Criteria. For information on School Recognition criteria click here.

  • Session led by OPS Common Sense project lead

Teach a Lesson

Choose one of the following digital citizenship teaching opportunities from Common Sense Education.

Classroom educators: Teach one digital citizenship lesson.
Options include:

Non-classroom educators (administrator, counselor, principal, etc.):

Create, oversee, and/or develop site-wide digital citizenship implementation using the Implementation Guide.

Engage Families

Choose at least one of the following resources or activities.

Host an in-person/virtual event for parents, caregivers, and family members with ready-made workshops (available for middle and high school only).
