What was the purpose of the Mayas building the
temples before the decline of civilization? Did they ever finish the ones they started?

The Mays built the temples because some temples honored local kings. in the city of Palenque had a temple built to list his achievements. So the temples that the Maya built where to honor the local kings. They honored their kings because they thought the where related to gods.

They are still standing today
The mayas stopped building temples when there was the decline of civilization. The temples are still standing today, they must've built the temples well put together because most of the temples in Guatemala are just chipped but not broken down all the way. They use to let the people who toured the temples tour inside but now i think they are getting to old and they don't want them to brake them so they will not allow people to go inside the temples.
