Bear Bulletin
February 28, 2020
From Mrs. Spencer:
Happy End of February Bears! We have two months of the second semester almost completed. The second semester in school always seems to move much faster than the second, particularly in secondary schools. We hope this newsletter provides the information you need to have a successful semester. Please reach out to us if you need anything. A few updates:
1. Our SBMS Google Public Calendar (located here) includes STAAR dates and any alterations to our bell schedule. To minimize confusion, we are not altering the bell schedule unless testing requires our doing so. On those days, we will host an alternate homeroom schedule which has been attached to the public calendar and placed in this google drive.
2. SBMS Spring Finals Schedule: We are putting our final touches on the Spring Finals Schedule and hope to have it available next week. Stay tuned!
3. Algebra Meeting for Parents of Students Enrolled for Next Year: Join us March 10th at 5 p.m. in the SBMS Library for a conversation related to the supports and expectations in place for students scheduled to take Algebra next school year. Hear from teachers and parents on what is needed to be successful.
4. A MTF Schedule will occur the week of March 9th due to:
- 6th and 7th Graders are the Released STAAR on March 9th (Math) and March 10th (Reading). No lunch deliveries to campus may occur for 6th and 7th Grades. An Alternate Homeroom Schedule will occur on these days to allow for a four hour testing window.
- 7th Graders will participate in a Career Day on March 11th.
5. The 3rd Nine Week Honor Assemblies will occur on Wednesday, March 25th. Please join us at the following times:
- 8th Grade: 8:30 a.m.
7th Grade: 10:50 a.m.
6th Grade: 1:30 p.m.

Please Help Us Support Our SBMS Custodians
You may have heard from your child that we have asked students to all report to the cafeteria at the beginning of lunch instead of splitting into the Snack Bar and Cafeteria. By doing so, we are able to monitor hallway behavior and ensure our cafeteria practices get off to a good start. Students will be released to their choice in dining locations very shortly thereafter.
The vast majority of our students make excellent choices, but need help with a few issues we are seeing around the school. If you have a moment and can talk through the following with students, we would appreciate your support!
1. Cafeteria Cleanliness: We do ask students to dispose of all of their trash as lunch comes to a close. At times, students are gathering items in the center of the table and leaving them or allowing items to fall to the floor and not taking care of them. Students are also sometimes selecting to throw their trash away from afar which can lead to them missing their target (trash can) or hitting another person. We ask that students get up and walk to the nearest trash can.Students who are repeatedly leaving their areas in disarray may be asked to help the custodians sweep and tidy up the cafeteria.
2. Cafeteria Behavior: Spring has sprung in the middle school. Please help us curb this behavior by reminding your students that lunch is a time to socialize with reasonable voice levels and to behave as they would in a restaurant or at home. No interesting food concoctions should be made and tried, no water squirting or other silliness should occur. IF this continues we may assign consequences like assigned seating or otherwise.
3. Ceiling Darts: My middle school friends share that SBMS is not alone in that we are seeing post-it note and staple "darts" implanted into our ceiling tiles. While these darts are clearly an intriguing physics activity, our custodians do not need to remove them each evening from our ceiling tiles. If you notice your child is carrying a ton of post it notes and staples, a conversation may be worth having. Students who are making and tossing these will be assigned consequences for the mess and risk of injury to others for tossing them.
