2012 Accomplishments

March 2012: Nearly 500 student athletes and their coaches from eight southeastern Wisconsin school systems attended a day-long event featuring Life of an Athlete founder John Underwood. Life of an Athlete works through high school athletes to send a clear message to the community that student drug use is not tolerated. The Planning Council coordinated the event for the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth – Southeast Region. Funding for the event was provided by the Wisconsin Department of Health.

April 2012: The Milwaukee Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families (LIHF) released its Community Action Plan calling for the elimination of racial disparities in infant mortality in Milwaukee by the year 2020. The Planning Council facilitated the two-year, citywide planning process for Milwaukee LIHF and wrote the action plan. The project was funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Program of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

June 2012: The Safety Net Clinic Inventory for 2011 was released to the public. The Planning Council worked with the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership and the Free and Community Clinic Collaborative to create this update of the 2008 inventory. Funding for the project was provided by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and Faye McBeath Foundation. The information in the document is intended to:

  • Improve access to health care services for Milwaukee’s vulnerable populations:
  • Identify gaps as well as redundancy in Milwaukee’s health care delivery network; and
  • Inform strategic planning, collaboration and investment in growth of community health care capacity.

June 2012: “Improving access and reducing barriers to depression treatment for Latino elders: Un Nuevo Amanecer (A New Dawn),” was published in Professional Psychology: Research and Practice. The article was co-authored by Planning Council Director of Research and Evaluation, Lisa Larson, and Associate Researcher Erin Malcolm, along with staff of the United Community Center, which runs the Un Nuevo Amanecer program. The article details how Cultural adaptations can bridge scientifically rigorous interventions to underserved populations.

September 2012: The Planning Council began development of a new offering, the “Evaluation Institute,” a vehicle to build the capacity of Milwaukee-area nonprofits to use evaluation techniques. Initial funding from the Faye McBeath Foundation allowed preliminary work on the project to begin with the launch scheduled for 2013.

November 2012: The Planning Council’s Director of Research and Evaluation, Lisa Larson, presented a workshop on evaluation capacity building at the American Evaluation Association’s annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. See her power point and handouts here.

December 2012: “We All Hold the Keys” report made recommendations on treating persons with dementia-related behaviors in place and avoiding care transitions with the goal of making Wisconsin more dementia-capable. A product of the work of the Alzheimer’s Challenging Behaviors Task Force, the report was created by the Planning Council and the Association Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter. Funding for the project was provided by the Helen Bader Foundation, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Faye McBeath Foundation and Extendicare Foundation.
