BIG IDEA
Use this strategy to review, summarize, and synthesize any content.
DIRECTIONS
1. Break class into groups of 2-4. Partner up the groups so they are competing against another group or they can compete against one another.
2. Each group gets a pile of 20 scrabble letters.
3. The students in the group have to create a 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 letter word using the tiles they have been given.
4. After the students create their words, they share the words with the entire class or with another group.
WHEN TO USE
You can use this strategy for a variety of content areas!
1. Review vocabulary: The students must create words that help define a vocabulary word.
2. Character traits: Use a character from a story and create words that describe the character
3. Conflict: Students create words that represent a conflict in literature, social studies, science, etc.
4. Sentence Variety: Students create a sentence with their words. Must have a 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 letter word that creates a sentence
STRATEGY VARIATIONS
To support teamwork:
· Students can barter or exchange letters with other groups.
· Students walk around and see other groups work while one team member explains the words.
To support struggling students:
· Provide multiple examples of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 letter words.
· Provide a few blank word tiles
To challenge students:
· Students can create their own 2 letter word for an abbreviation. They must explain the abbreviation and how it relates to the content.
· Students create a visual image to support their words.
