With us being past the midpoint of the school year, it's a great time to check with your students and their supplies. See the notes below:
- Make sure your student has several pencils in their trapper and locker-a large amount of students coming to class without pencils.
- Needing donation of Kleenex for classrooms, please bring to the main office anytime or during conference nights.

Future Cities Competition: Team Sandy Point Advances to Nationals
Franklin Future City students began working on their projects shortly after Halloween of last year. The theme this year was “Natural Disasters and Protecting the Electrical grid.” Students were required to build a model, write a 1500-word essay, build a virtual city and create a power point using the software, SIM City and prepare a presentation explaining their city and highlighting the electrical grid. Mr. Paul Salamon, the teams’ engineering mentor, worked with the teams daily in order to help them prepare their models and moving parts. All models are built out of recyclable materials and students are not to go over the $100 budget allotment. Franklin had ten teams in total this year and all of these teams competed in the Franklin School competition held right before the holiday break on December 18th. The students also shared their projects with friends and family during an Open House on December 17th in the Franklin IMC. Students are in 7th and 8th grades and work on their projects during their PACT Future City time during the school day. However, much outside work and practice is involved in preparing for the competition.
The four teams that advanced to the Regional competition at Prairie Point Middle School were: Team Mattastaour including 7th graders Abbie Richey, Jenna Baker and Katelynn Kock, Team Airbiru including team members Amelia Basler, Katie Earl, Ethan Longwisch, Charlotte, Ottemoeller, Thomas Gehrke and Lucy Niemuth, Team Zolotoya Gora including 8th grade team members: Wynn Greenlee, John Lorenz, and Malika Khurana, and finally Team Sandy Point including 8th grade team members: Jaedyn Toman, Kathryn Zylstra, and Merideth Langton.
The teams competed on a snowy January 23rd at Prairie Point. They presented their project to expert judges and also competed for Special Awards. Team Zolotoya Gora won the award for “Best Constructed Model” and Team Sandy Point won the award for “Best Electrical Grid.” Finally, five teams out of the 40 competing were selected to competed in the top five based on the culmination of all of the essay, model and presentation points. Team Sandy Point was selected for the top five. Ultimately, Team Sandy Point made up of Jaedayn Toman, Kathryn Zylstra, and Merideth Langton were the Iowa Regional champions and earned a trip to Washington, D.C., along with Mrs. Siebenga and Mr. Salamon to compete at the National level February 16th- February 20th. The students are very excited and are currently polishing their presentation and model to prepare for Nationals. The trip will also offer the girls a chance to explore some of the sights in Washington, D.C. The team gained a lot of self-confidence during the course of the project and learned much about team work and engineering.
Franklin Geography Bee
All Franklin students began by participating in their social studies classroom geography bees. Social studies teachers then submitted names of their top finishers and our ten finalists were determined. With school being called off frequently in January, it was difficult to find a time to get the bee completed, but we were able to do so n Monday, January 28th. The participants were:
- 6th graders: Luke Burkamper, Sydney Eisenmann, and Vivian Tarvestad
- 7th graders: Katie Anderson, Allee Brown, Elizabeth Hawkes
- 8th graders: Wynn Greenlee, Aaron Johnson, Ella Sears, Annaleise Tone
The top three finishers were: Annaleise Tone in third place, Elizabeth Hawkes was runner-up and the champion was Wynn Greenlee.
Wynn took the online geography test on we will wait to see if Wynn advances to the State competition to be held in Cedar Falls later in the spring.
Congratulations to all the competitors!
