On Thursday, we will start to use these strategies for subtraction. Students need to understand that addition and subtraction are inverse (opposite) operations. Students will need to analyze word problems to determine the numbers needed to solve the problems whether they are addition or subtraction word problems.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
4th Grade
Next week, we will start division. On Thursday, we used base ten blocks to divide a 3-digit dividend by a one digit divisor. We will use the partial quotients strategy to divide. It is different than the long division algorithm that we learned as children. Please see your students notes next week to help students with their homework.
Students received a new Continental Math League sheet that will be due next Friday, Sept. 20th. Continental Math League is a nationwide mathematics problem-solving competition. This CML homework consists of problems from previous years' CML quizzes. Students are expected to spend at no more than 15 - 20 minutes on each problem. They have a week to complete the assignment, so students could complete a problem a night. Students MUST show their work to each of the problems. If they can't find a solution, they need stop working on the problem and to write down what they tried, and then get a parent to initial that problem. Students, especially students new to CML, are NOT expected to have mastery of all the skills and strategies necessary to solve all the problems. Students are expected to ATTEMPT all problems using creativity, perseverance, independent thinking, diligence and the skills and strategies they have learned.
5th Grade
Next week, we will start learning about place value through the thousandths place. We will compare place value positions, add and subtract with decimals.
