From Principal Norvell's Desk
I hope this newsletter finds you rested and well. It’s a bit hard to believe that it’s February 2017 already. To me, that sounds like a date from a futuristic movie…I guess that means the future is now!
At WBS this month, our character focus is perseverance. Perseverance is a really big word for many of our students, but we believe in introducing really big words to our students - especially really big words that have really big and important meanings, for school life and beyond.
Sometimes, this part of the year is tough for students and teachers. I think what happens is that the anticipation of the holidays is over, and warm weather seems far out, so, like winter itself, everyone is moving just a little slower. In times like these (and in many other moments in life), students can really benefit from a keen understanding of the word perseverance. After all, we want our students to be resilient so that when the the going gets tough, they will persevere and forge ahead to great success! That's the WBS way!
As always, thanks for sharing your children, the most precious people in your life, with us...WHAT AN HONOR!
Take care,
Jackson
Kindness Week is February 13 - 17
- Can you fit acts of kindness into your family schedule? Try this from Moments A Day.
- Or make a family kindness jar so that kind acts are acknowledged. Add beans to a jar for kind acts done and when it’s full it can magically turn into candy!
Let’s Celebrate Read Across America Week! (FEB 27th - MAR 3rd)
Each year, schools across the country celebrate Read Across America week during the first week of March. This date was chosen because beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss was born on March 2. This year, our school is going to do something extra fun to join this special celebration of reading! Each day will have a theme to correspond to a Dr. Seuss book title. Students may dress according to each day’s theme. Be creative and have fun!

NC Kids Digital Library
A first of its kind statewide eBook consortium specifically for children has launched in the Tar Heel State. The North Carolina Public Library Directors Association (NCPLDA) together with OverDrive and the state of North Carolina has created a new digital resource sharing service for kids’ pre-K through 4th grade, NC Kids Digital Library. Over 3,700 eBooks, audiobooks, videos, and Read-Alongs are now available to younger readers via 85 regional, county and municipal libraries in North Carolina through OverDrive’s digital reading platform. These materials are instantly available for every child, at home and everywhere. The NC Kids Digital Library was launched in January 2017.
Here’s how it works:
A collection of 3029 eBooks, 689 audiobooks and 37 streaming videos on a custom website, https://nckids.overdrive.com/ or through the OverDrive app
300 titles are available with simultaneous access, available anytime with no wait lists
All titles can be accessed via the app on all major computers and devices, including iOS®, Android™, Chromebook™ and Kindle® (U.S. only).
Easy, secure access. All that’s needed to get started is a library card
