Important Notes and Reminders for all 5th graders
BOOK FAIR December 3-10: Book Fair Website: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/indiansprings. We are expecting books representing a wide variety of ages and interests - including pre-K - so students (and parents) can do some holiday shopping! Feel free to email Jonathan Thorn (jonathan.thorn@kellerisd.net) with any questions!
Graded Work - Please check your child’s file/binder for their graded assignments. Many students are carrying graded papers and it makes it harder for them to find current assignments. It is recommended that all graded assignments go home and be kept for at least the entire 9 weeks before disposing, just in case of any gradebook discrepancies.
Supply Check - Please make sure your child has earbuds. At some point during the day, students use them almost daily in 5th grade. Earbuds are not provided by the district or campus. Teachers have a few loaner pairs that we purchase ourselves, but we do not have enough to supply the students who are consistently without them. Please also check to make sure your child has pencils and colored pencils.

ELA
We are moving into our informational writing unit. It is one of our favorites! Students will be writing books about a topic of their choosing. They will learn new researching skills and put all of the grammar lessons, spelling checks, and new vocabulary to good use.
Spelling checks happen every Wednesday. Each student must master (cannot miss more than 2 words) one list before moving on the next list. Each student works at their own pace. They may use Spelling City to practice! (in Google Classroom)
HOMEWORK: While we remind students daily about their ELA homework, some of them continue to tell you that they do not have ELA homework. They may not have ELA worksheets, but they have ELA homework EVERY WEEK NIGHT!!
They are to read at least 20 minutes a night (their choice of book with no reading log). Statistically, this is the minimum number of daily reading minutes outside of school that actually makes kiddos better readers. If you want your child to be a better reader, a better writer, and possess a better vocabulary, they have to read outside of school. Please see the infographic below.
Study their vocabulary words. The lists and assessment schedule are in Google Classroom.
Now, we are adding in spelling quizzes, as well. The lists and instructions are in Google Classroom
