Week of October 2, 2017
Wear Pink on Wednesdays in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It's College Week!
In honor of College Week, below is a brief summary of what the state of Texas has prioritized in the last few years to support college and career readiness for students.
Alief and Hearne are right on target to support these programs! Find out more information on the TEA website.
P-16 Initiatives
The agencies have worked together to try to create a seamless education system from pre-kindergarten through doctoral programs. It's an effort to create a solid educational base from which students can build postsecondary success in college and the workplace. Learn more about the P-16 initiatives.
Early College High School
One of the most rapidly growing educational initiatives in Texas is the Early College High School program. This program allows students to earn high school course credit and up to 60 hours of college credit by the time they graduate from high school.
T-STEM
Texas was one of the first states to create a renewed focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The Texas STEM (T-STEM) creates rigorous secondary schools focused on these critical subject areas.
Texas GEAR UP
The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) project is a seven-year federal initiative designed to increase early college awareness and readiness in traditionally underrepresented groups.
Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate
Along with Early College High School programs and dual credit courses, Texas students may earn college credit if they secure a high score on Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate(AP/IB) exams. Fee reductions and other incentives are available through the AP/IB program.
This week is not only about exposure. It is also about educating our students on their options as they leave elementary school and move to middle school, high school, and beyond.
Have fun this week! Staff members who wear college/university attire may wear jeans all week.
You make a difference!

Your students need you!

Meet Mrs. Lori Wood!
1. I attended the University of Northern Colorado in my home town of Greeley, Colorado.
2. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in education with an emphasis in Early Childhood Development.
3. The best part of college was meeting all the new people and studying and learning together.
4. The toughest parts of college were choosing my major and having to make time to attend classes, study, and work without getting too tired.
5. When I'm not at Hearne, I am hanging out with my dogs watching Netflix, volunteering at/or attending church, spending time with my friends, visiting a nursing home with Valentino - he's a therapy dog, or gardening.

Grading Policy from Alief ISD-
GRADE BOOKS
All teachers are expected to maintain a grade book.
Grade books should:
- Document grades less than or equal to 69 with a phone call or signed parent note (within 48 hours), prior to entering a failing grade into the grade book.
- Have actual numerical scores (0-100) recorded.
- Teachers are expected to record grades electronically using the district’s electronic grade book which links to the Report Card System. In addition, it links to the system that allows parents the ability to view their child’s grades and attendance online. As a result, it is extremely important for grades to be entered into the system in a timely fashion. This system automatically backs up data nightly.
- Reflect a child's progress with respect to the Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS).
- Have a sufficient number of grades to substantiate the report card grade; the minimum suggested is two grades per week per core academic area.
- Have numerical grades for reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies.
- Have labels for grades (e.g. “Test-Explorers,” “homework – P.87 2-digit addition with regrouping,” “Electric Circuit Project,” etc.).
- Refer to "Explanation of Elementary Progress Reporting" and "ESL Students - Grading Guidelines" for additional information on grading procedures.
Considering the information above, we should have two grades per week for the weeks we had school during this marking period.
So if marking period is only 6-7 weeks due to Hurricane Harvey, 12 -14 total grades would be sufficient.
All other grading expectations should be followed from the handbook (i.e. weight of grades, contact for failing grades etc.)
What if my student fails a major grade?
Elementary Grading Guidelines
- Students retake/correct any failing major-grade assignments to improve – highest grade is recorded
- Three days to retest
- Run grade reports every 3 weeks to check for failing grades
- Options to demonstrate mastery may be retesting, projects, demonstrations, oral/verbal assessments
Please speak with a content specialist or administrator if you have ay questions.
Meet Mrs. Veronica Johnson!
All about me.....
1. I attended Southern University A & M College in Baton Rouge, LA.
2. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.
3. The best part of college was being involved in several different professional organizations, on campus. Through those organizations I was able to meet some pretty amazing people. There were professors and other campus leaders who mentored and helped shape me into the woman that I am today. Another thing I really enjoyed about Southern University was football season. My suite mates and I attended every home football game and we could not wait until halftime to watch our band perform, it was truly a show anytime they took the field or the stage! (The Human Jukebox)
4. The toughest part was being so far away from home, missing my family and getting use to sharing 1 bathroom with 7 other girls.
5. When I'm not at Hearne I am with my girls and my husband doing something fun!!!! We love to travel whether it's taking a weekend trip to visit family and friends or us hanging out at one of our time share properties. We also love following Southern's Football Team. "Go Jags"
Remember: Submit 1 week of Lesson Plans every Thursday for the following week.
