Hippo Nation...Leave a Legacy! October 2021
A Note from your CCE Principal
Dear CCES Families--
Staff is working hard for our students, students are already making gains in their learning and we are continuing to plan for success! Part of the planning includes having a vision for the campus and strategies to get to that point! Please be on the look out for a separate communication from our campus sharing our Campus Improvement Plan (CIP) that helps our community understand all the focus areas that we are aiming to refine at CCE! Everything that we focus on leads to student success!
In addition, please know that you will be receiving information about how our campus participates as a Title I campus and all the great things that we get to benefit from to ensure equitable resources for all our students across our campus! You will be receiving information about:
1. What it means to be a Title I school
2. Parent-student-teacher compact (November 1st parent-teacher virtual conferences)
3. Parent and Family Engagement Plans & Playbook
We also want your feedback to help us streamline our communication and learn what families want from us in terms of communication. Please fill out this survey (if you haven't already) and help us refine our work to better serve our community!
We are excited to share that we are going to be linking in our November Newsletter a quick year-long reference sheet to all events in addition to the monthly calendar below. This will help you know what events are PTA sponsored, campus-sponsored, and district-sponsored as well as help you plan in advance! Thank you for your support! Gracias!'

Did you know that every elementary campus has a HippoWay Character Education Program?
This program teaches students to focus on various character traits throughout the school year to build character and community in students and at our schools!
Hippo Way trait:
- Responsibility- Taking ownership of my thoughts, words, and actions.
Our classroom teachers will be teaching our hippo way trait lesson of the month the 1st week, and our SEL lesson the third week of the month during classroom Community Circle.
If you have any questions regarding our character education program, SEL lessons, and school counselor guidance, please don't hesitate to contact me at valerie.kozak@huttoisd.net.

Notes and Reminders from....
Reminders from our front office:
*If you have a doctor's appointment and need to pick up your child, call the school office to notify them that you will be visiting, drive through the front loop of the school and park in the front parking lot, walk up to the front entrance and ring the doorbell to the right on the wall, have your identification ready to show and we will call for your student and escort them to you outside. The office staff will sign them out and then back in when they return.
* All Elementary Campuses are now accepting outside deliveries for staff and students i.e. lunch boxes, birthday items, snacks, backpacks, donations, flowers/gifts for teachers.
* Please check your skyward family access to ensure that you have updated your email address. This will ensure that you are receiving important notifications from our campus. Thank you!
* Make sure students arrive on time each day, school begins at 7:30. Each day that a student is tardy equals cumulative learning experiences that are missed in the classroom. Students often feel stressed when they don't know what they have missed when they are late, let's help them be successful by getting them to school on time.
* Campuses are still closed to visitors at this time during school hours, thank you for supporting us in a million other ways as we plan to get back to a more normal visitor policy soon! We are revisiting the policy again after labor day and will notify our community if there are any changes. Thank you!

Parents, Let's Avoid Truancy Concerns:
2nd Grade Parents~
Beginning in the 2021-22 school year, all students in second grade will be assessed with the Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) in the month of October. This is an assessment that we use to identify students for giftedness. This practice will enable us to Identify students with exceptional ability or potential so that we may more equitably serve students, especially populations underrepresented in Gifted and Talented programming. Students will take this screener during the school day and it will take approximately 30-45 minutes. There is nothing you need to do to prepare your student for this screener. Based on the results of the CogAT screener, eligible students will be invited to complete the full GT testing battery in the Winter.
