Senior News
Winter Newsletter for Ludlow's Class of 2022
If You are Planning for College, Here's What You Should Be Doing Now
- If you haven't applied yet, do so NOW! Talk to Mrs. Johnson about sending your transcript.
- If you haven't yet filed your FAFSA (for financial aid), do so NOW! Ask Mrs. Johnson for help if needed.
- Housing: If you are planning to dorm at your college, be on the lookout for your school's dorm application and fee. (Search "housing" on your college's webpage.) Apply early, especially if you are trying to pick a specific roommate. Please note that the housing fee is often non-refundable, so be sure you are confident of your decision. If you need help with deferring this housing fee, please see Mrs. Johnson.
- Scholarships through the college: Be sure you have completed the "Freshman Scholarship" application if your school has one. Those deadlines are often late January/early February. Many schools have auto-awarded ones too, but be sure you complete the scholarship application if they offer one. This may open up the student to additional awards through the college.
- If you need scholarships to help fund your college tuitions, books, etc, then keep searching and applying for scholarships. This process can take some time. See the Scholarships section of this newsletter for ideas on how to find some.
- Financial Aid/Award Package: Every school processes these differently, but coming up soon, your college will load into your account your "Award Package". In order for them to do this, you will obviously need to have applied, been accepted, filed your FAFSA, and set up your student account/logged into your account/college portal. They will list the costs to attend their school, and subtract out any grants, scholarships, loans, or other awards you received. You will have to "accept" the awards/loans you want and "reject" the ones you do not want. Generally, you will accept the "free" money (scholarships, grants), but many will "reject" the loan(s) listed. Taking out a parent/student loan is a decision each family will have to discuss and decide on. Mrs. Johnson or your senior's PAWS Coach can help review these items with seniors if needed.
Apply for Scholarships!
Some general reminders:
- Parents/Students should check with their employers, affiliated organizations, military branch, churches, banks, credit unions, and insurance agents to see if they offer scholarships to employees/members.
- Be sure you look at the Freshman Scholarship application to the colleges you are considering. Many have a separate application for this, so don't assume that your admission application will make you eligible for the college's scholarships.
- Seniors can build profiles and find scholarships that may apply to them on these search portals. You can do this in your Xello account (login through Clever). Other sites: Fastweb.com, Scholarships.com, or StudentScholarships.org.
- KHEAA puts out a publication, Affording Higher Education, which lists scholarship opportunities by type of college, type of scholarship, and location. Spend a few minutes looking through this to see if any apply to you! (The link takes you to a page where each chapter is separated out)
- Ludlow's Local School & Community Scholarships are released in the spring. You'll be notified when those applications are open.
- You should never pay a fee to submit a scholarship. Beware of scams!
- While they aren't necessarily direct scholarships, check out the information on how much money you could save on a college education through the Gateway2NKU Program, the River City Promise, and/or the KY Work Ready Scholarships. Details are linked in this newsletter.

Gateway2NKU is a Great Option!
Two Degrees, Once Path
Gateway2NKU allows students to start taking classes at Gateway, then transfer to NKU to turn their Associate's Degree into a Bachelor's Degree. Why choose this route? It could be a more affordable option for students/families since Gateway 's tuition is more reasonable. It also might make the transition to college easier on the student.Check out the details on Gateway2NKU!
River City Promise Offers Free Tuition
Two years ago, Gateway Community & Technical College and Northern Kentucky University partnered to make a pledge to the river city high schools, including Ludlow High School.
If a student is Pell Grant-eligible (meaning they show financial need on the FAFSA), they will qualify for this FREE tuition program!
As part of the program, students enroll in the Gateway2NKU Program: Start at Gateway Community & Technical College and complete an Associate Degree. Then transfer to NKU and complete another two years of classes to earn their Bachelor's Degree. ALL TUITION IS FREE to the student!
This is an AWESOME OPPORTUNITY for our LHS Students!
Work Ready Scholarships for Seniors (or Recent Grads or Parents too!)
