We have a lot of kiddos that are not getting homework completed.
Math: They will have nightly math homework Monday thru Thursday, either on paper or on the computer.
Reading: They also have 120 minutes of reading each week from Friday to Friday that needs to be recorded in their agendas. This will be recorded in txconnect the second nine weeks. It will not be part of their average for grades, but you will know each week if they are completing their reading.
Back Row: Karen LaCombe, Melinda Hoover
Front Row: Jennifer Mackie , Reagan Habermacher, Melissa Reagan, Abbey LarremoreHere's what's happening in 5th grade this week:
Math

Getting stronger in 3 by 2 digit multiplication ( Using algorithm, partial products and area model strategies. )
Check your student's planners for homework assignments this week. Math homework is assigned Monday through Thursday every week. Math journals should also be used to study skills we learn in class.
Science
Force Motion Energy
- Students will demonstrate that the flow of electricity in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and can produce light, heat, and sound.
Introducing:
- Engineering Process- Students will read about maglev trains, experiment with magnets in order to build a model of how a maglev train works.
District Assessment of Force Motion and Energy Unit- Next Tuesday
Please use the resources in Google Classroom to review the skills covered in this unit.
Lab Journal: Your student's lab journal should be a good resource to review essential learning from hands on experiences and experiments. When reviewing for any content assessment, it along with Google Classroom resources are your student's best friend.
With that in mind, students are encouraged to do their best work and thoroughly explain using scientific vocabulary (new and reviewed). Grades often come from how they explain their thinking.
Language Arts
- This week we will be working with plays and elements of drama.
- We will also be starting on some imaginative fiction stories.
- We will be continuing our Novel groups.
- Starting Tuesday night they can use 30 minutes a week on Istation for reading homework. They can go to Activities or ISIP. All their log in information is in thier agendas
THIS WEEK READING LOG HOMEWORK WILL GO INTO THE GRADE BOOK!! This homework will not be part of your child's average, but I do want to use it as a way to communicate that your child is completing the weekly homework of 90 minutes of at home reading this week.
Social Studies
- We will begin learning states and capitals for the southern states. Retake for this test will be Friday, December 14th.
- This week we will be digging deep into the meaning of our Pledge of Allegiance. We will begin looking at our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Word Work
This week we will work with the words we have in our writing.
Students will need to know how to spell the spelling words only. They will need to know the meaning and how to use the Flocabulary words.
Flocabulary
Spelling Words
We will get a new list when we return from break.
Each test will have two dictation sentences that the students will write on their papers. They will be graded on the spelling words in the sentences and spelling words from past lists. They will also be graded on proper capitalization and punctuation and possibly whatever skill we are working on for the week.
