Play in the Classroom
K-12
Big Idea!!!
Play is a vital and important aspect of the classroom and can lead to a more meaningful, lasting and profound learning experience for your students. Dr. Stuart Brown has researched the science of play and its integral role in the social, emotional and academic learning for humans of all age levels. The theory centers around the idea that we have set asside the idea of play as a distraction and not important to learning and development. Development of an environment that integrates an opportunity to play will increase the engagment and lasting learning of all students. Stuart Brown also goes on to identify the specific roles people tend to take on when engaging in play. These 8 personalities can be used as a handy tool to survey and observe your class while engaged in a play activity. I found it valuable to help when picking specific lessons or strategies for a given group.
