A Message from Dr. Bearden...
I hope that you are all enjoying a beautiful Saturday and it's hard to believe that this school year is almost over! We have a lot of "busy-ness" to wrap-up the final week! Although the final 9-weeks of school did not unfold as any of us expected, there has continued to be joy in teaching and learning!
While I do agree that the pandemic stole away a lot of our "normal" and forced us to evolve quickly into society where quarantine, face masks, and social distancing existed for safety. I will not accept the last 9-weeks as a "new normal", at least not for my human existence. Yes, some things changed...but, honestly, some things probably needed to change to make us (me) more conscientious about health and hygiene. But, I have missed so much about my normal of being surrounded by hundreds of students, teachers, and families every day! I miss seeing smiles, hearing laughter, and watching children grow! I really really miss the daily HUGS!!
Please know that as we are wrapping up school, there is already a great deal of planning for next school year. At this point, we are not sure how the new school year will unfold. Therefore, I included some important dates for August (in the calendar events below) and will continue to send communication over the summer as I have updates for you.
At Principal Chat last Tuesday, we discussed that next week, May 18th - 22nd, we will have a few parent events to pick-up and/or drop-off students' belongings. But the types of activities will (as much as possible) mimic what the last two weeks of school would be were the children and teachers together. I hope that your children enjoy the week and the interactions with their teachers and classmates. Watch May 12th Principal Chat Recording
5th Grade Events and Celebrations: This year is definitely different as far as finding ways to make our 5th graders feel special as they all transition to middle school in the fall. We have some things planned that we hope will suffice and, virtual or not, SHE STAFF IS SO PROUD OF OUR 5th GRADERS!! 5th Grade EOY Events/Information for Parents and 5th Grade Celebration Parade Route, May 20th at 9 am!
SHE Shines Shout-Out to PTO and SGC: Our PTO and SGC members do so much to support Summit Hill staff and students and the majority of it is behind the scenes. I would love the opportunity to brag on PTO today and thank them for generosity, albeit virtually behind the scenes.
First, PTO hospitality is providing boxed lunches for SHE staff members, who are volunteering to help with our parent pick-up process on Monday and Tuesday. We appreciate that so much!!
Secondly, PTO executive board has given a generous donation to the SHE Shares event for May, which will be used to help Summit Hill families who are in need right now. THANK YOU!!
Our SGC members met virtually to discuss and plan for next year. We welcomed our three newest members: Parent Representatives, Kelly McDonald and Derek Frame; and, TAG teacher, Linda Herrington. The council members show such great commitment to setting and monitoring our goal to maintain Summit Hill's legacy of putting students' academic, social, emotional, and physical needs first!!
I want to personally thank our members who will roll off for 2020-21 and who provided unconditional support and encouragement during my first two years as SHE principal. I am a better leader because they cared enough to commit and to serve for the greater good. Thank you!! Parents: Edison Farrer and Noelle Pedraza, Teachers: Ayumi Bryan, Susan Benton, and Community Member: Tiffany Batiste.
SHEShares for May is focused on Milton Families and 1st Responders. If you would like to donate gift cards for the May SHEShares, you can mail gift cards of $10 or more (Kroger, Publix, WalMart, Target, Visa/MC, dining, etc.) to:
Summit Hill Elementary ATTN: SHESHares, 13855 Providence Road, Milton, 30004. Please ask for OR keep a copy of the gift receipt from the retailer, if you need tax documentation. Thank you all for SHARING and CARING!!
SHE Parent Pick-Up and Drop-Off on May 18th & 19th: Please open this PowerPoint and check out Slides 9 - 12. SHE EOY INFO FOR PARENTS, May 2020.
That is all from me this week! Thank you for reading, for your partnership, and for your continued encouragement for our teachers! As we wrap up these last two weeks of the school year, I hope that we are able to capture just a little bit of the fun and excitement as if your Huskies were with us! Take care of one another and stay safe!
Please reach out if you have any questions or anything to share. Take care, Lorrie
