Volume 6, Issue 19____Jan. 13, 2014
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” ― William Arthur Ward
Dear Gattis Team,
I'm so happy to be back on campus this week! I hope 2014 is starting off in grand style for you all!
It feels like forever since I've been with you all, in your classrooms, up and down the hallways, and interacting with the kids. I had such a great week at leadership training last week, then spent Friday taking my dad to the funeral of his favorite aunt. I hope to get caught up on with you all on anything you need from me today.
Throughout my training last week, you all as a group and as individuals often came to my mind. I truly appreciate your work and the energy you put into our students. I'm happy to serve the students and families of Gattis alongside you all!

Testing Accommodations - ACTION REQUIRED
Please remember to review student accommodations for upcoming CBA tests. You can find the accommodations in Google Drive under Gattis Testing Accommodations or by clicking the link below. There were very few accommodations noted for our English Language Learner for the first round of CBAs. Homeroom teachers are responsible for making sure their ELLs are receiving accommodations. Please review students carefully and let me know if you are using accommodations for testing other than those noted. Gabi is a great resource if you need to review information about allowable accommodation. A major qualifier for language accommodations is that a student is regularly and effectively using the accommodation in class.
Professional Resource of the Week!
I listed several resources for you last week and I'm leaving them up in case you didn't get a chance to check them out. Also here is another resource regarding student engagement, particularly relevant to our upper elementary students. There is a great video link embedded which is my favorite part. Be sure to check it out.
Are you looking for a professional book to read to start off the new year? Here are a couple of great choices to consider, along with an article from Edutopia to support you in keeping your new year resolutions!
Habits of the Mind for the New Year (article)
The Power of Our Words (book)
Independent Reading Inside the Box (book)
Please remember to periodically review all emergency procedures as a team to ensure that all team members know appropriate procedures in the event of a drill or actual emergency. Every staff member should be prepared to follow appropriate safety procedures in the event of a lock down, evacuation, reverse evacuation (from outdoors back inside), or severe weather.
