Helpful Hints for Zoom and Teams Class Meetings
Another exciting week of distance learning has come and gone, and we have learned a few things about managing classes on Zoom and Teams! Here are some learnings to make your next live session with your class go more smoothly.
- If you use Zoom, that’s ok. Just be sure to use all the safety features.
- Set a new meeting each time- don’t reuse previous meetings or passwords
- Keep meeting numbers/passwords/hyperlinks safe by emailing them to your students the day of the meeting. Do not post them in public locations!
- Use the waiting room. This will keep students out until you arrive and approve them. We don’t want unsupervised kids saying or showing inappropriate things to classmates before you log on.
- If you use Teams, learn the features that will help you manage student behavior.
- If you click on “participants” you will see a list on the right of everyone on the call. You can MUTE them all, or individually! This makes it much easier for your students to hear you teach. Many teachers mute everyone at the start of the lesson and turn mics on again when they are ready for student responses.
- Have kids use the “chat” feature to ask you questions as you teach. Warn them that if they use chat in a disruptive manner, you will remove them from chat. You can “mute” their ability to type in chat.
Displaying visuals: Sometimes a white board is difficult to see on computer. The words might be hard to see, or there is glare. Consider picking up your doc cam from class. You can show kids how to solve a math problem using pen and paper under the doc cam, and it will be very easy to see and read. And of course, you can take a picture of your work to post for students as a visual support.
