Beyond Question - Marzano #9 (Thanks to Brett James for submitting these summaries!)
The ninth and final highly effective strategy identified by Dr. Marzano is the use of questions, cues, and advance organizers. These practices can help students get in the appropriate mindset with content, preview what they will learn, activate prior knowledge, and make connections with previously learned information.
This strategy is largely self-explanatory, but here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Research shows these practices are most effective when done prior to learning
- With cues and questions, focus on the important rather than the unusual
- Remember to use wait time to allow students time to think and process
- Expository advance organizers- ex: “We’ve talked about what habitats are and why some animals prefer to live in different places than other animals do. Our goal today is to learn about the four layers of a tropical rainforest and which animals live in each of those different layers.”
- Narrative advance organizers- ex: “I’m going to tell you a story about a little tree frog who climbed from the forest floor up to the very top of the tallest tree in the rainforest.”
- Skimming
- Graphic organizers
- KWL charts
- Analogies
Get Back Jack
Ms. Amy Ponder asked her seventh period class if they knew who "Henry O. Flipper" was at the beginning of the year. None of her students knew who he was or what he had done. She felt it was time to get them to Jack Hadley.
She asked to go in February and was given Feb 28 as a day to spend two hours with JaMarcus Underwood (Museum Educator) at the Jack Hadley Black History Museum. Students started out learning how the museum came to exist and why Jack Hadley built this museum. They spent time in the library talking about the portions of the museum and were then able to do a tour of each portion of the museum in three groups. Each group had a scavenger hunt to find black history figures of Thomas County and place their answers on their worksheets. (In one picture they also stumbled across a historical principal from TCCHS- Papa D). They returned to class seventh period and discussed what they had learned at the museum.

"The kids just feel so relaxed, yet respectful of the new space. We used it for the first time for our End of Pathway study session. Since we had them for 3 hours, we really had to be creative in how we kept them engaged. Students still accessed the individual computers for their pre-test & research of missed questions. We were able to use the large table for round table discussion, the small table groupings for more intimate group work, and the large seating area was nicely positioned with the smart board for our review on both Quizlet and Quizziz. When their groups were shuffled for Quizlet live, it was fun to see how the could utilize the different spaces for collaboration."
