Maize South Elementary School
November 2022
A message from Principal Mrs. Carrie Thrash
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope all our families had a safe and healthy winter break, making the best of the holiday season. Quality family time at home is just as important as quality instructional time at school. Our priority together is to nurture kids to be intellectually curious, academically successful, socially skilled, and emotionally confident.
It’s hard to believe we are halfway through the year! For the second half of the year, we are looking forward to our upcoming One Book, One School event, the PTO fundraiser, our Winter Party, Field Day, and many other fun activities. We will continue with our Capturing Kids Hearts character trait focus each month. For January, our focus will be on respect. This newsletter contains information from Capturing Kids Hearts with ideas and activities to reinforce respect at home. In addition, teachers are infusing lessons about respect into their instruction, and we will review respect at our next Pack Party.
Thank you for your continued support, hard work, and dedication. MSE staff and teachers are excited about the new year! We look forward to strengthening our partnership with all of you while making an impactful change in our kids' lives.

This month we are focusing on respect in our lessons. We focus on treating others how you want to be treated, thinking before you speak, and waiting your turn, which is not always easy!! Please see the link below for additional ideas and activities for helping your student practice respect at home! Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions!
Nurses Notes
Complete a request for Administration of Medication form.
If your child needs to take an over-the-counter medication at school, please read, complete, and send the medication form to school with your child. Prescription medication must have the same form completed by a parent/guardian and the prescribing physician. Parents/guardians may bring the medication to school with the signed med form.
- The medication must be in the original container.
- The medication must be current. Expired medication will not be administered.
- The medication must be age appropriate. Any medication for a person older than the child will require a signed form from the doctor.
- All prescription medications require a signed form from the doctor.
- All prescription medications must have the pharmacy label with the student's name on the bottle box.
Students may not self administer medications in the elementary schools. If I can be any of any assistance this year, please don’t hesitate to call or email me. My office number is 316-462-8305 and my email is jconsidine@usd266.com.
MSE Dental Screening
On Feb 3rd MSES will be participating in the district wide dental screenings. They will occur from 9-9:50 and are being provided at no charge by a local dental office. If you would prefer your child not participate, please send an email to nurse Joni at jconsidine@usd266.com.

Not only will it be planning the Fundraiser, but also the celebratory Glow Run as well! Hope to see you Tuesday night!
Please join the MSE PTO for a fun Spirit Night at Carousel Skate, Thursday, January 19th from 6-9 pm! The evening is full of fun, laughs and a pizza party for the class that has the most students in attendance and a gift card for the teacher! All proceeds go to the MSE PTO! This was one of our most successful events last year...we hope to see you there again!

Food Service and lunchroom reminders
Maize USD 266 uses the Skyward Food Service and RevTrak fee payment systems. Please check your email and phone numbers in Skyward, so you may be alerted when their child has a balance of $7.00 or less.
- The first email is sent when your child has $7.00 left in their account.
- A second email is after your child has one lunch left.
- A third email is sent when a zero balance remains in the account. When no money is left on the account, your child will go to the office and call his/her parents. Please put money into the account that day. Parents will also receive a third email when their child has a zero balance.
No cell phones/communication devices allowed during the school day
The use of cell phones/communication devices during the school day is prohibited. Phones should be turned off and kept in student backpacks during the school day unless special permission has been given by the administration for use in classroom projects directed by teachers.
Teachers have the authority to collect cell phones or other devices such as electronic watches, AirPods, etc. during class time to help reduce distractions to the learning environment. It will be considered a violation if the student’s cell phone or communication device disrupts a class.
Visitors and Volunteers during the school day
A reminder that all visitors who wish to enter the school during school hours must present a government issued photo ID, such as a driver's license on their first visit. This includes parents, guardians and grandparents. Please allow for extra time to either run the driver's license or to look up their information if already in our system. Thank you for allowing us to keep our students and staff safe.
