Principal's Message
It is hard to believe the first month of school has already passed us by. I’d like to thank you for taking the time to help your child get off to a great start this school year. Building solid routines and expectations at home helps reinforce the work that is done daily at school. One way we build those routines and expectations here at school is with PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). PBIS, perhaps you have heard your child refer to it as The Wildcat Way, is a positive behavior support system designed to help students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. The Wildcat Way sets clear expectations and creates a positive atmosphere for learning. We have spent much of the first month building routines and modeling our all school expectations, In all things be: Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. We celebrated with our all school photo last week. We attempted to make a hand, symbolizing waving hello to a new school year while also waving goodbye to a building we will leave after this year.
October brings a long stretch of school time uninterrupted by vacation or a break in the schedule. One of the most fundamental parts of learning is being healthy and in school. Getting regular sleep, eating healthy, and washing hands are great habits to get into. Also, be sure to talk daily with your son or daughter about their day as it sends an important message – school is important. The way you ask questions matters. Ask open-end questions instead of questions that can be answered with a yes or no. For example try:
- I saw on Seesaw today that (fill in the blank)...tell me about it.
- What was the best thing you did at school?
- What was the most interesting thing your teacher said today?
- How did you use your pencil today?
- What was the best question that was asked today?
While in classrooms during the first month of the year I have seen many great activities. I have seen our 4k students singing and dancing , 5K students enjoying recess, 1st graders making a reading plan, 2nd graders working in Number Corner during Math, 3rd graders setting reading goals, and 4th graders working collaboratively using chromebooks and google docs. I hope you have had the chance to connect to the classroom via Seesaw to see for yourself what is going on.
Finally, homecoming is this week and no community does homecoming better than Oconomowoc! We have spirit days planned and we are excited to be a part of the parade on Friday.
Paws Up!
Mr. Schreiber
