Off the Shelves
A newsletter for Masterman School Library
Procrastination Station
All this week and the beginning of next (Jan. 13-22), the library will be open every day until 4:30 p.m. We are offering snacks and academic support for high school students preparing for midterms. Students can use this time as an alternative to Options. At the suggestion of one of our Library Teen Advisory Board members, we are calling these sessions Procrastination Station. So, all-l-l-l aboarddd!
Declaration to Right to Libraries
Library Supplies for You!
A benefit of our Book Fair, Scholastic Dollars, has enabled us to get a new CD, iPod player available for check out. Other items the library has for you: long-arm stapler, laminator, book binder and spines.
World History Project: From Cleopatra to Mother Teresa
Soon the ninth grade World History class will choose a biography of over 200 pages on a famous foreign figure. On Destiny, I have compiled a resource list of biographies we have in our collection that fit that criteria. In October, I was able to obtain a Donors Choose grant for books on the Pennsylvania Young Readers Choice Awards list; now I will try again to get biographies for this project. The link for Donors Choose is http://www.donorschoose.org. Just found out that Donors doesn’t have Amazon as a vendor, so I’ve appealed to them to use an outside vendor. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
Signing of the Declaration to Right to Libraries
In preparation for the Declaration for the Right to a School Library on Monday, January 27, 2014, I urge all to view this compelling argument written and narrated by Springfield High School teacher librarian, Dr. Joyce Valenza. http://blogs.slj.com/neverendingsearch/2013/12/18/school-library-story-when-libraries-thrive-and-when-they-crumble/
I plan to take the subway to The Library Company at 13th & Locust after school on that day and invite any students, teachers, or parents to come with me or meet me there. The event starts at 4:00 p.m. and will end by 5:00 p.m. and will feature brief words by our own Gomian Konneh and American Library Association President Barbara Stripling. So, please, come, sign the Declaration to show your support of school libraries in particular, partake in some light refreshments, and mingle with others who share your point of view.
