NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 4 Week 4 : 12 November, 2020
Dear Parents and Staff
This week has been significant at Notre Dame for two specific reasons; NAIDOC Week and Remembrance Day.
Our week commenced with a Liturgy of the Word in the Mother Mary Piazza which was unfortunately interrupted by the weather. Back in their classes the children learnt about both the significance of our Aboriginal past and its longevity. We all think of the time when Jesus came to earth which was approximately 2000 years as a long time ago. From history we have learnt that the Aboriginal culture has been in Australia for at least 60,000 years which is 30 times the length of time since Christ came. We also talked about the need to not just be good inside but to be positive by doing things to help others. The children received a bookmark with quotes from both Catherine McAuley and Nano Nagle on Tuesday to remind them of this. There is currently much debate about our National Anthem and whilst I am not going to share my opinion, I think the debate is a very positive sign as we move into the future.
Yesterday afternoon the staff watched a movie, In My Blood It Runs, which is about a short period in the life of a young boy and his family in the Northern Territory. The movie is available on ABC iView and I encourage families to watch it to assist with their understanding of the Aboriginal culture and the challenges that many are faced with.
Our Remembrance Day service, yesterday, was very special as our Year Six Leaders led this over the school PA. Classes listened in and observed the minute silence and completed activities related to the remembrance of those who have served In the armed forces so that we are all able to enjoy the freedoms of our wonderful country today.
OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE (OSHC)
We have had our Registration inspection this morning and expect to receive notification of this early in December. I am fully aware that many families are interested in their children attending and it is our belief that we may be oversubscribed. To allow fair access for all we will post a link for families to register their expression of interest on our school website next Thursday, 19 November, at 4.00pm. At this stage we will be registered to accommodate 30 children from 4 Year old Kindergarten to Year Six. Each family must register an expression of interest for their own family; no multiple family registrations will be accepted.
The OSHC is planned to open from Monday 1 February for before and after school and for holidays and Professional Development days throughout the year. The before and after hours of operation will be:
STATIONERY LISTS
Stationery lists for 2021 have been sent home with the children earlier this week. Please check your children’s bag for these and contact the school office if you are unable to locate them.
SCHOOL REGISTRATION AUDIT
On 17 November our school will undergo an Audit as part of our ongoing Registration. A component of the Audit is for parents to be given the opportunity to complete the attached survey. I encourage parents to participate in this exercise so that those involved in conducting the Audit are fully aware of our school’s operation from a parent perspective. If you are unsure of elements of the survey, please refer to our school website where further information may be located.

3 YEAR OLD KINDY
This term has been another busy term in 3 Year Old Kindy. It is hard to believe that we are nearly finished for the year. All the children have been getting ready to take the big step into 4 Year Old Kindy.
This term we have had so much fun exploring the wonderful world under the sea. We made our own under the water world by using sand, shells, seaweed, coral and rocks. We then discussed what animals live in the ocean. Luckily the children stopped Mrs Millard from putting cows, sheep and pigs in the ocean.
After this we talked about how the ocean is made up of water, so we used some material to represent water. We then discussed where else we see water - in lakes, at pools and in our water taps.
We thought about all the fun things we like to do when we are at the ocean - going in a boat, fishing and swimming.
To finish our under the sea theme, we celebrated Pirate Day which included dressing up for the day. We had so much fun on this day. We even made and decorated pirate hats. Thank you to our families that helped us with our amazing costume!
We look forward to ending the term completing Christmas activities and crafts.

REMEMBRANCE DAY
The 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, in 1918, is the moment when fighting ceased on the Western Front during the First World War after more than four years of continuous fighting. Each year, at 11am on 11 November, Australians pause for one minute silence in memory of all those who have died in wars, conflicts and peace operations around the world. This day has become known as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. It's an important time to pause and reflect on the important role Australians played in that war.
We as a school commemorated Remembrance Day on Wednesday by participating in a whole school prayer service. Children reflected in their classrooms about those people who gave their life in service for us.
You may like to talk with your families about this special day.
The children in Year 2P and 4P have written some prayers to God thanking veterans. You could pray these at home.
