Catholic Schools week was such a fun and busy week. February is just as busy!! Take a look below to see...
February is a short but busy month. February for us will include the 100th day of school, the beginning of Lent, Valentine's Day (and party), learning about Abe Lincoln and George Washington, Dental Health Month, and Black History Month. Whew! Lots to do!
- 100th day of school - Believe it!!! Tuesday, February 3rd is the 100th day of school!!! We will be doing lots of fun things to celebrate the day! One thing that will be coming home with your child on Monday is a bag (see picture below) for your children to fill with a collection of 100 things. There will also be a paper for them to complete explaining why they chose the items they did. I apologize for not sending it home over the weekend, so hopefully this advance notice may help! ALSO... I am looking for a few things to be donated to help with the activities for the day: Box of 5oz. Dixie Cups (for tower building, 3 boxes are needed), 1 large bag of Skittles, 1 large bag of regular M&M's, 1 large bag of Bugles, 1 box of Kix cereal, 1 package of paper plates. Please shoot me an email if you are interested in helping. It is greatly, greatly appreciated! I couldn't do all these fun things with out your help! Thank you!
- Final Stable Syllable Project - We have been learning all about Final Stable Syllables in Phonics. The children have done a great job remembering and learning these new parts of words. This project is due February 12th. I prefer that the work be completed by the students, although you may certainly help with ideas for pictures and spelling. I believe in their abilities to complete this with minimal guidance. Any questions, please let me know!
- Romeo and Lou - During the month of February we will continue with a classroom wide writing assignment that each student will get a turn participating and taking home to complete. Romeo and Lou are characters from a story we read together in class. They are a polar bear and penguin who build a rocket ship to go on an adventure. Each child will have the opportunity to bring them home and are encouraged to journal about all the adventures they have with them. The adventures can be real or make believe. Please feel free to include pictures or email them to me and I can print them at school to include them in the journal. All the children seem very excited to get their turn. Please have your child return the cooler to school the next day:) Yes, I said cooler, they are animals that are used to a "cooler" habitat! See picture below!
- Book It - WAY TO GO FIRST GRADE! Everyone in our class completed the requirements for the month of January! For February, the requirement will be 2 books again! We have another short month, with lots of things going on! The children are to fill in the Heart Book It paper and return them to school. (Also send in the book for the AR). The children have until February 27th.
- Scholastic Book Order - Last call for Book Orders! Orders need to be placed by this Friday (Feb. 6th). This is a great way to get tax free books, plus free shipping on all orders. Every dollar spent also earns points for our class to earn free books. It's a WIN-WIN! The link below allows you access to all grade level books should you want to order for siblings, too. Any questions, please let me know! Thanks!
- Winter Wishes- Thank you to everyone that donated kisses to make the Warm Wishes a success. The wishes raised over $200 dollars! The children helped make posters, decorate bags, sell the wishes and sort/count the kisses. A very rewarding experience! The wishes will be delivered on Monday!
- Glue Sticks - Thank you to all those that donated glue sticks! IT is amazing how quickly we use them!
- Report cards - Report cards should have come home in the mail. Conferences will be held the Week of February 9th. Please contact me with concerns. I will gladly conference with any family, so please do not hesitate to sign up for a conference!
- Homework - Please be sure your children are completing their homework thoroughly. I have had an unusual amount of homework being turn in that is incomplete or haphazardly completed. I always encourage the children to take pride in their work and take their time. Thank you!
Thanks again for all you do to help make First Grade Rock!

MATH
We have been working with place value. The children have really learned this concept quite quickly. We will continue working on this concept as well as expanded form (i.e. 63=60 tens +3 ones). We will work on comparing the numbers using Greater than and Less than.
We will also continue to work on graphing, addition and subtraction with number families and missing addends. The adding and subtracting will begin to be through 20. Please continue to work on flash cards at home! I can tell those children that do their 5 minutes of math practice every night. The children need to be able to recognize and complete simple math facts by the end of First Grade. Fluency is very important for success in 2nd grade.
Phonics
Contractions will continue to be practiced as well as the reinforcement of the Final Stable Syllables. The children will also be introduced to the letter y as a vowel. This can be tricky, so please encourage your child as they happen upon words with y as a vowel.
