TES Weekly Update

MORE THAN...A Few Words...

Ready or not ....our students returned back to us from Spring Break excited to share their adventures and many of us were, and still are, pulled in many directions getting ready for PARCC in some aspect or another. Janet shared with me what her group reflected upon during the faculty meeting and I will work on how to get that information out to everyone. Taking the time to reflect and communicate areas of strengths and weakness, sends very clear messages about some great things that are happening and some things that need to improve from the teachers' perspective. I will be reaching out to other areas of our staff to gain their input as well.

As always, we appreciate your voice and will continue to encourage everyone to share their perspectives about something that may be causing negativity in one way or another. On the flip side, sharing with each other the positives and the great things that are happening at our school shouldn't be kept a secret :)

Social Media:

Our students have finally caught on that TES has an Instagram account, TES_NJ. While this is another great tool for communication, it is vulnerable to public/student comments. A few of our TES students made inappropriate comments about our school under posts. It was easy to figure out who they were based on their "names" and they have been addressed. Comments can also be may directed towards other students. Although Instagram has an age restriction of 13 and older, MANY students already have one. Social media is discussed in great depth in the older grades, but it needs to be discussed with 3/4 as well. What is additionally upsetting is that the student accounts were not set to private, making all of their information, posts, and pictures viewable to the public. I am requesting grades 3-6 teachers to talk to your students about social media, commenting, and representing our school in a positive way and safety concerns.

The PARCC life is a hectic one to say the least! This testing window affects our entire school building in way way or another. Some things to remember:

  • check all schedules shared, not just if you are a Test Administrator to know where students are testing and schedule changes for that day.
  • Quiet in the halls of testing ares.
  • No school announcements will be made other the the morning announcements during testing days - NO NOT CALL INTO TESTING CLASSES. Contact the main office first.
  • OT/PT/Instrument Lessons/Speech/Counseling/Social Skills - Please be sure to know if your students are involved with testing and when. Please adjust accordingly.
  • Support teachers/aides form grade 5/6 who are not a Testing Administrator may be used as a proctor or assist as needed in grades 3/4 or possibly assist with recess/lunch
  • Flexibility is the keyword for the next 2 weeks :)

Thank you for encouraging the students to use the additional playground games/equipment. We've had a few issues with storage box and missing items, but for the most part it has been a great addition. It is important that we make every effort to maximize the amount of play time for our students. This means arriving to recess on time and lining up as close to the scheduled end time as possible. 5/6 grade will have a FLEX recess time this week and may be out at an unscheduled time.

April - Upstander: Week 2

A huge thank you to Kyle, Janet, and to all of our PARCC tested grade level teachers and small group Test Administrators. There is no denying it has been hectic and a bit of information overload. Many of you have come to me directly to workout concerns or simply vent and that's a good thing! Once we get through the first day, I hope some of the stress eases up. I appreciate all of your efforts and positive attitudes as we get ready to enter the PARCC side... :)
