SCPS IMPACT
January 12, 2022
IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM
Dear SCPS Families,
As you may be aware, at the January 10th school board meeting, our school board voted 4-3 to terminate Superintendent Dr. Baker with no cause effective immediately. During the transition until our School Board appoints a superintendent, the division’s central office leadership and school principals will continue to support our students, parents, and staff in providing a positive learning environment and keeping our programs and operations running seamlessly.
The second semester began on January 11th and with the impact of the highly transmissible Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus, some staff and community members have reached out inquiring about a temporary transition to all remote learning due to the high positivity rates throughout our county and state. In compliance with Senate Bill 1303, we must provide access to in-person learning along with adherence to the most recent CDC guidance.
Also, we continue to maintain a COVID Dashboard. It is important to note that as we have been on winter break, we anticipate that many of the student cases and some staff cases were not reported. As a result, actual cases may be higher than reflected on the dashboard. On January 6th, we received information about recent adjustments to CDC guidance regarding quarantine practices for positive cases and exposures for K-12 schools, we will continue with our current practices outlined in our ReEngage Plan. At the January 18th school board meeting, division staff will share these changes; additionally, there may be school board input and/or direction regarding mitigation measures moving forward.
Regarding our instructional calendar, as noted in our School Board approved Instructional Calendar, the first nine days of missed school due to inclement weather, etc. will not be made up. To date, we have used seven of the nine days with the change to the Fall break in November (11/22 and 11/23) and the recent winter storm Friday (1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, and 1/10). Therefore, there are two days remaining. Additionally, according to VDOE’s Superintendent’s Memo #290-21, school division superintendents are permitted to designate 10 school days as unscheduled remote learning days. Moving a school day to remote learning will not change the current School Board approved Instructional Calendar.
It is important to note that we have modified one regular school day (2/15/22) to remote learning (leaving 9 remaining days). February 15th is a special election for the vacant Board of Supervisors Livingston seat as many of our schools are utilized as polling stations.
Moving forward, our focus remains on providing high-quality student-centered instruction. We thank our parents, staff, community members for your partnership and support as we continue to navigate the remainder of the school year. Together, we prepare our students for their future.
