Dear Washington Families,
I have been so impressed this week with our students' and staff's resilience and attitude. It was amazing to see so many smiling faces in person and virtually this week! I want to again thank our staff for their continued efforts at making your child(ren) feel safe and comfortable either at school or virtually. Although there is a feeling of urgency to get into the full swing of academics right away, our teachers will be focused on connecting with students and families and building a sense of community in each of our classrooms during the first few weeks of school. This will take time, but it cannot be overlooked or rushed.
Starting the week of September 14, Cohort A synchronous days will be Monday and Tuesday and Cohort B synchronous days will be Thursday and Friday. On Wednesdays, staff will be engaged in planning and professional learning.
Please understand that teachers will be engaged in planning and teaching Monday-Friday, so their availability to respond to emails and phone messages will be limited. To allow them to provide their full attention to synchronous learning groups, we’ve put together a few tips that will help with problem-solving and/or support:
- Identify another family that you can connect with to help answer questions.
- Encourage students to advocate for themselves and communicate their needs or questions on synchronous days.
- Send notes with younger learners on synchronous days so the teacher can follow-up.
- At the elementary level, follow your teacher's preferred method of communication and time of day.
- Secondary students are encouraged to utilize their teacher’s office hours to follow-up with questions or concerns.
In order to maintain work/life balance for our staff members, emails will be responded to within one working day, between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday only. Our staff is committed to showing grace and understanding with your student(s) as we navigate these new models of learning. We ask that you show our staff the same as they work to support students in multiple learning environments.
Enjoy your weekend!
Mr. Russell

Staffing Updates
Please help me welcome the following staff members to Washington -
Angela Quinn - Speech/Language Therapist is going to be at Underwood. Angela has been at Washington for several years, and we are going to miss her expertise and advocacy for students and families. She was a wonderful asset to our school, and we will undoubtedly continue to lean on her as a colleague across different schools.
Annie Celantani will be our new Speech/Language Therapist. She has experience as an SLP in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade settings, as well as in acute care and inpatient rehabilitation. Annie's graduate studies included work in the Saint Louis University Speech and Hearing Clinic, the Saint Louis University Early Childhood Language and Literacy Center, Special School District of St. Louis County, St. Louis Head Start, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and long-term care. We are excited that Annie is joining our team at Washington!
Carrie Streiff-Stuessy will be on leave and supporting our JK team until December.
Brenda Jones will be our reading specialist at Washington, supporting teachers, staff and students. She is also the reading specialist at Jefferson Elementary School in Wauwatosa.

Sodexo and Breakfast/Lunch Program
Hello WSD Families,
Last week, we sent a communication regarding changes to our food services processes for the 2020-21 school year. You can view the contents of that communication here.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved an extension of a waiver that allows us to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students enrolled in the Wauwatosa School District through December 31, 2020. This means that all students enrolled in the District - either via Phase Into Learning, Tosa Connected or Wauwatosa Virtual Academy - will have the opportunity to get breakfast and lunch for free, regardless of eligibility. Students are no longer required to have funds in their account to receive meals.
The approval of this waiver does not change the process that students and families must follow to order meals on the days a student is not learning in a District building. Families must still complete the appropriate form to purchase meals for all students in their household for the full five-day school week for those enrolled in Tosa Connected or Wauwatosa Virtual Academy. Those families who are in the Hybrid/Cohort model will place orders for the three days they are learning asynchronously.

Please note that the form must be submitted each week, at least 24 hours prior to meal pickup.
And finally, you can view breakfast and lunch menus for the month of September here.
