TEACHER CORNER
Understanding the Danielson Model
Here's why it was rated a "3":
This is a 3 because the learning tasks and activities are designed to invite students to make their thinking visible. (The students sing a song in Spanish, and the teacher prompts the students to make the sound of a rooster and use hand gestures to accompany the lyrics. The teacher explains that students will draw a rooster later and shows a picture of a rooster on the cover to show the students how to draw it.) Most learning tasks have multiple correct responses or approaches and/or encourage higher-order thinking. (When a student asks a question about the assignment, the teacher responds, "It's up to you because it's your rooster.") Most students are intellectually engaged in the lesson. (The students contribute animal sounds when asked. / Students all sing the song with the teacher, facing the teacher and making hand motions when appropriate. / Students contribute remarks about the song and the book. / The teacher asks the students, "Do you know my favorite part?" and the students all begin singing and performing the hand motions.) Materials and resources require intellectual engagement, as appropriate. (The teacher has the song lyrics printed on sentence strips with picture clues. / The teacher uses a song with Spanish lyrics to support the learning of an English-language text.) The pacing of the lesson is appropriate, providing most students the time needed to be intellectually engaged.
