Roles of the Senate and House of Representatives
Senate Roles
The Senate is responsible for suggesting new laws for the state of North Carolina, choosing officers for positions, and removing bad officials from their positions. The two main positions in the NC General Assembly Senate are the Lieutenant Governor and the President Pro Tempore. The President Pro Tempore is the chairperson of the Senate. The Lieutenant Governor is the President of the Senate who presides over sessions and only votes in the event of a tie.
House of Representatives Roles
There are 120 members of the House of Representatives in the North Carolina General Assembly. The jobs of the House are to suggest bills for North Carolina, elect the Speaker of the House, and to debate about a suggested bill or law. The Speaker of the House is in charge of debates.
