My Interest

"My Daddy is a history teacher and it's kinda in my blood to love history."-Anna Claire

One evening my Daddy was reading about a man named Hitler. I wanted to know who he was and what made him famous. I had lots of questions about this man and wanted to learn more.

Why didn't he like Jews?

Why did he think Germany needed more land?

Was he really a leader?

So my Genius Hour Project was to find out the truth about Adolf Hitler. Why was he loved and then hated by so many people?

Early Life

Hitler was born April 20, 1889 in Austria. He was one of five children. All of his siblings, except one, Paula, died as children. His father was Alois and his mother was Klara.

Both of Hitler's parents died and he was left homeless and poor.

Adolf Hitler dreamed of becoming an artist, but was denied enrolling in art school two times. He sold postcards with his paintings on them to make a little money on the streets of Vienna. During this time he began to develop a dislike of Jews, like many others that lived in Vienna.

Hitler's Military Career

Adolf Hitler was drafted into the Austrian army at the beginning of World War I, but he was given permission to join the German army instead. He was a messenger during World War I. He was awarded two Iron Crosses for bravery.

Hitler had a handlebar mustache. His gas mask would not fit over it, so he was ordered to trim his mustache into the one most people think of today. Close to the end of World War I, Hitler was temporarily blinded in a mustard gas attack. He was still in the hospital when World War I ended and was said to be angry that Germany had lost.

Hitler in Politics

In 1920, Adolf Hitler joined the Germans' Workers Party. This political party would later become the Nazi Party. Hitler promised the German people that he would provide them jobs, food, rebuild Germany's military, and bring new land into Germany.

To do these things, Hitler set a goal to become the leader or Fuhrer of Germany. Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933. He began passing laws that made him the most powerful man in Germany. In 1934, Adolf Hitler became the supreme leader in Germany.

What Hitler Actually Did

Hitler made great promises to the people of Germany. To make these promise come true he slowly began passing laws to take away the rights of the Jewish people. Over time he did accomplish his goals of rebuilding German industry and its military. Hitler then began taking land from other countries. This led to the beginning of World War II.

Why was Hitler Hated

Adolf Hitler was ultimately hated because his actions led to the Holocaust, World War II and the destruction of Germany. The madness Hitler caused resulted in the death of millions of people.
