Heritage Bears
October 2016
Principal's Message
Dear Heritage Families,
It is amazing how quickly the school days go by! In just two weeks the first quarter will come to an end. During the first quarter, each Heritage Intermediate student has had his/her reading level assessed and instruction has been planned that focuses on increasing their reading skills. We have also assessed our students’ ability levels in math computation, concepts, and applications. Teachers will be sharing this information and much more at the upcoming Parent-Teacher conferences scheduled for October 26 and 27. Parent-Teacher conferences provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the academic progress of your child. Our teachers and students will prepare important data to share with you during your scheduled Parent-Teacher conference.
We want to thank the many families who have supported our Walk-a-Thon Fundraiser during the first quarter. The funds generated from these events go directly to supporting the many activities that students participate in both inside and outside of the classroom! I want to personally thank the Heritage Elementary PTA Fundraising Committee for their hard work in making our fundraisers successful. As October begins, please make sure your family continues to take advantage of the great activities offered at Heritage. I also want to let you know that our 8th Annual Honor flight fundraising drive is under way. Together, the Heritage community has raised nearly $15,000 and sent over 30 veterans to Washington, D.C.
I want to thank all of our families for making Heritage a super place for students to learn and grow! I also want to let you know that our overall attendance percentage has been strong during the first quarter. I want to continue to stress how important it is for students to maintain good attendance, arrive to school on time, and stay through the end of the instructional day! Please know that the teachers, staff, and administration at Heritage Intermediate are committed to the growth of your children and are working diligently to provide them with an exceptional learning environment.
“It’s a GREAT day to be a BEAR!”

Fall Parties
Our fall parties are scheduled for Friday, October 21st from 2 pm to 3 pm. Be looking for information from your child's teacher regarding details or specific needs. We welcome parents to attend and would like to remind you that all volunteers and visitors are required to have a competed background check PRIOR to their classroom visit. A new form must be submitted for every school year. If you have not done so already, please complete forms A & B from the WSD Volunteer Handbook and submit to our office NO LATER than October 7th to allow time for the background check to clear. Volunteer forms are located in our office as well as on the district website.
Honoring our Veterans
It's October, and that means our 8th annual Honor Flight coin drive is under way. Look for your child to be bringing home additional information within the next few days. Here are a few things you and your child can do to help the cause:
* Hats for Heroes Donate $1.00 on October 20th and November 10th and wear your favorite hat to school. Please keep them school-appropriate with little distractions. Wearing a patriotic hat would be the best!
* Bracelet sales. The Ambassadors will be selling patriotic-themed bracelets for $1 each before school and at lunch through November 11th.
* Donate your loose change as often as you can between now and Veterans Day.
Thank you so much for all of your effort and support. It really does make a huge difference in the lives of these veterans! For more information on the Honor Flight Organization, please click here.
Special Education Corner
Fun Facts:
Did you know.....our special education staff serves the K-5 campus and has 38 staff members total.
Helpful Hints:
If you have a child that likes routine it may help to predict any changes in their day and communicate with the case managers and/or teachers if disruptions/changes are happening at home.
This month let's focus on....SPEECH AND LANGUAGE:
Did you know that... Language is different from speech.
Language is made up of expressive language, receptive language and social language. In the state of Missouri students who struggle with language development may meet eligibility criteria for a Language Impairment. Language therapy in the school setting typically focuses on building children's vocabulary, grammatical skills, understanding and following directions, understanding what is being said to them (i.e. processing the language), answering and asking questions, and social language. Building these skills can help students better succeed within the classroom setting.
Speech is the verbal means of communicating. Speech consists of articulation, voice and fluency. In the state of Missouri students who struggle with speech development may meet eligibility criteria for a Sound System Disorder in one of the following areas: Articulation, Phonology, Fluency and/or Voice. Depending on the area of eligibility speech therapy focuses on how speech sounds are made, using the vocal folds and breathing to produce a sound, and how to produce fluent speech (i.e. stuttering therapy).
