Free Lunch for all our Dragons!
Derby Friends,
I hope many of heard now of this wonderful opportunity for our students to receive FREE lunch every day as well as breakfast!
I wanted to answer some questions that may have come up, but know we had a lengthy discussion about this at BLT and I hope your BLT reps can answer questions as well for you, but please do not hesitate to ask if you have questions after reading below.
One question that comes up time and time again is DO STUDENTS have to APPLY for this….NO, if you are a student at DRE you automatically get free lunch!!
Another question is what about the money in their accounts??? Nutrition Services are saying these monies can be used for ice cream and water purchases or additional purchases for extras they may want—also remember these accounts would carry with them if they went to a non-free lunch school and/or their middle school placement.
Again, I applaud this amazing program and what it means for our families!! Thank you Nutrition Services for your work to make this happen! Maybe send them a Drop in the Bucket to say thank you!
If you have additional questions, please let me know!
Thank you,
Kristi
Email from Laina Fullam:
Good morning,
I just e-mailed the parents of the 7 CEP schools the meal application and the information in green below and not the talking points attached to this e-mail. Your news letters from Dana Clippard and Ben Tilley also have additional information more pertinent to schools and not parents on this topic.
Dear Families:
We have some exciting news for you!
Starting January 5, 2016, Columbia Public Schools’ Nutrition Services Department began a pilot program through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). CEP is a nationally successful approach to ensuring students have access to healthy school meals by allowing all students enrolled in selected schools to eat free breakfast and lunch daily regardless of free and reduced price status.
The following 7 schools are participating in this provision:
- Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School
- Benton STEM Elementary School
- Blue Ridge Elementary School
- Derby Ridge Elementary School
- West Boulevard Elementary School
- CORE (Center of Responsive Education)
- Douglass High School
Students enrolled in these 7 schools will receive free breakfast and lunch.
Families are still encouraged to complete the free and reduced price application in order to secure benefit coverage at other Columbia Public School locations should a family relocate to a school not included in the CEP program. The application is attached for any who would like to complete the process and determine eligibility.
Please contact Nutrition Services if you have questions at 214-3480 or lunch@CPSk12.org.
