Tena koutou e te whānau o Kohia Terrace School

A warm welcome to Austin (Room 7) and Phoebe (Room 13), who started at KTS this week.

Well it certainly feels like autumn is on its way with the change of temperature in the morning. It is really important that fleeces have your child’s name on them as they are often taken off during the day. It makes it so much easier to return them to the rightful owner. For those of you who have purchased second-hand fleeces, please double check that the old name has been removed.

We start this week with no new COVID cases in the school – our third week in a row. It is really evident that whilst there are cases in the community, we are not seeing the same impact as we did at the beginning of the month. I am sure there will be the odd case now and again but for now, we are going well. Again thank you for your support, for following our guidelines and for the number of kind words I have received for how we have handled the current situation.

Parents back on site

As the requirement for vaccine passes is removed from 11.59pm Monday 4th April, we are going to remove the requirement for parents to drop off and pick up from the school gate. To celebrate this we will be having a coffee van available outside the hall for adults from 8.30am to 9.30am. Appropriate distancing is still required of course. We are asking that you remain out of classrooms, and that for meetings with teachers you still email and arrange a time for a ZOOM meeting.

All students will be released for the day at 3pm, starting from Tuesday 5th April, and we are suggesting the Year 1 students be collected at 2.55pm. It has been so good to see so many students making their own way out of school and walking/ scootering/ biking home – we do want this to continue.

Thank you so much to all those people who have ordered samosas. They are really delicious, so please make sure you get your order in ASAP. A reminder also that we have an ice cream sale at lunchtime on Friday. Thank you so much to the PTA for getting both these initiatives underway.

We look forward to seeing you around the school a little more next week – Alison

Camp Success

What a delight to spend some time at Houghton’s Bush with our Year 5 students. I saw children riding a bike for the very first time, building a bivouac in the bush, orienteering, hitting the bullseye in archery, new foods being tasted – even bugs being eaten. What a success! A HUGE thank you to Anusha Chebbi and Sarid Olvera Azures for their leadership over the three days and for all their efforts to ensure the camp could happen. A very sincere thank you also to our parent volunteers for giving up their time. Such a lovely way to bring the end of a very different term to a close. A lot of schools cancelled their Term 1 camps – I am delighted that we could work together to ensure this opportunity was still extended to our students and that such great memories were made.

School Payments / Donation – final few days for 2021 tax claims

Again thank you to all those parents who have paid the activity cost and the suggested school donation for the year. It is very much appreciated. A reminder that the voluntary donation is set as follows and there are just a few days left for payments so that you can claim the amount back in your tax claim.

1 child $495; 2 children $990; 3+ children $1237 (50% discount for third child)

Congratulations

Congratulations to the following students who received a KTS Learner Competency certificate at last week’s Azoombly:

Student Work

Running Club

We are starting a KTS running club! Students in Years 4–8 can run as part of our KTS running club on Wednesday mornings. We will meet at the school hall at 7:45am, run up Kohia Terrace through to Melville Park, where we will do 2–3 laps of the park, then run back to KTS. We will be all finished by 8:30am. We will not be crossing any roads, except the private road that runs through the University carpark. Our running coach will be Genesta Hamm, a former student of KTS, who is completing her Duke Of Edinburgh award, and will be supervised by Rachel Ogilvy or Sheryl McEwen. The first run will be this week, Wednesday 30th March. If your child would like to be included in the running club, please email rachel@kts.school.nz with your child's name and year level, to secure their place. There is no charge for this activity.

Yummy stickers

It is apple season again! After you have crunched your way through a ‘Yummy’ apple, keep the sticker and add it to a sticker sheet. These can also be downloaded from the website or collected from the office. Full sheets can be dropped at the office and earn 1000 house points. The more stickers we collect, the more sports gear we can earn for our school, so start munching!

PTA Update

Samosa Fundraiser

We are now taking orders for samosas, with deliveries on Thursday 7th April. These are super delicious and such a good thing to keep in the freezer for a quick snack or meal (especially if you are isolating!) Please also ask friends, family, neighbours and workmates if they would like to buy some. The flavours are vegetarian, lamb, chicken or butter chicken, and it is $20 for a bag of 10. Order on Kindo or from the school office by Friday 1 April.

Term 1 Ice Cream Sale is this Friday April 1st at 12.30pm. We will be selling Popsicles, Frujus and Trumpets for $2–3 at lunchtime.
