News for the week of February 11th
Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars
The Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars Program, sponsored by Michelin, N.A., is a proven reading incentive program designed to promote reading enjoyment and academic success among youth through the excitement and appeal of professional sports.
To complete the program, students must read 5 books during the designated 5-week time period. If the students reach their reading goal, they will qualify as a 2013 Greenville Drive Reading All-Star.
The reading program will run for 5 weeks: Wednesday, February 6th until Wednesday, March 13th. Students who complete the program will be honored at Fluor Field before the 7:00 PM Drive game on Monday, April 15th.
Each student who succeeds in reading the designated number of books will be honored at the Monday, April 15th Greenville Drive Celebration Game. The student will receive free admission, recognition on the DriveVision, a parade around the outfield warning track, a chance to throw the First Pitch, and a Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars T-shirt.
Book of the Week: In the Garden with Dr. Carver by Susan Grigsby and Nicole Tadgell
In the Garden with Dr. Carver by Susan Grigsby and Nicole Tadgell is a great picture book for any reader–young and old alike–who wants to know more about the brilliant George Washington Carver and how to be truly “green.”
Although this book is a work of historical fiction, the substance of the book is based on the actual life and teachings of Dr. Carver. He really did spend time traveling around the South teaching others how to “listen to the plants” and use the natural resources around them to live. He educated others on how to best grow things and how they could use nature to enrich their own lives.
Having a “green” lifestyle is not a new thing, and I think this book illustrates that for young readers.
For a more in-depth study of Dr. Carver and his work, pair this book with Tonya Bolden’s biography of George Washington Carver.
In the Garden with Dr. Carver is a nominee for the 2012-2013 South Carolina Picture Book Award.
Author/celebrity Holly Durst is coming to Fork Shoals!
On Thursday, February 28th, author and celebrity Holly Durst will be visiting with Kindergarten-2nd grade students. She will be promoting her picture book, Chocolate Socks, as part of our Read Across America celebration. If you would like to pre-order a book, please send a check for $16.19 made payable to Holly Durst to your child's teacher prior to February 28th.
Have you read the Book Award nominees?
Voting will be held this week! Every student will have an opportunity to check off which books they read and put a star by their favorite. (Yes, you can only have one favorite!)
For a list of books in each of the Book Award categories, visit the library blog (Fork Shoals Reads!) or take a look at the videos at the end of this newsletter.
*Note: Ms. Knight will announce the nominees for the 2013-14 Book Awards in March!*

PTA Short Term Clubs
Our PTA is looking for volunteers for our upcoming spring short term clubs that will take place each Wednesday for the month of March from 2:30-3:30. Club leaders are needed for chess, croquet, knitting, and basketball. Someone is also needed to lead a simple woodworking club. Home Depot will provide the materials, but a leader is needed. If you or someone you know could help with any of these clubs, please email forkshoalspta@gmail.com . Thank you for your help in providing these experiences for our students.
Black History Month
As an IB World School, we want to promote diversity, open-mindedness, and keep our kids thinking, researching, and inquiring. Our Social Studies Committee has come up with a plan to celebrate Black History Month. Teachers will send a link with questions, and they will also be available on the school website. Feel free to research the answers with your student. Students that provide a correct answer to any of the questions will be in the drawing for some fun-tastic prizes. Multiple names will be pulled each Friday during the month of February on the morning news! Good luck!
Pennies for Patients
Pennies for Patients starts February 4th and runs until February 28th. Students may bring in money to go towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Valentine Grams
The Beta Club will be selling Valentine Grams for 50 cents each February 11-13 during lunch. Valentine Grams will be a heart with a Valentine pencil. Students can write a message as well. Proceeds will go with to Pennies for Patients. Students can buy for other students or teachers. They will be delivered to classrooms on Valentine’s Day.
