Mr. Vince Sette and Mrs. Nicole McQuate
Welcome to 2022
I cannot wait to see what 2022 has in store for Norwayne Elementary. We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays with friends and family and we are excited to have everyone back.
The office is currently open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm at the elementary.
Parents, please return all school forms ASAP. These are essential to ensure we have the most up-to-date information for your child. Thank you for your continued support in filling these forms out for us.
Norwayne Elementary LITERACY Spotlight
Literacy is an integral part of a student's success in school. Please take some time to visit the NES Literacy Page where we highlight different aspects of what the students are working on in school along with book recommendations from staff and students. Be on the lookout for some Literacy Parent Nights in the near future.
NES Principaws are on Twitter. Check us out @NES_principaws as we dabble into the social media world to help keep everyone up to date on things at NES.
Counselor's Corner with Ms. Achberger
This month we will celebrate kindness week the week of February 14th-17th! Each day will come with a dress-up theme and a kindness mission for students to complete during the school day! Our focus will continue to be on emotions for most of the month of February. Here are our objectives by grade level:
Kindergarten and 1st grade- Name feelings based on contextual clues. Kindergartners and 1st graders are reminded to look at a person’s face, body, and situation to guess their feeling!
1st grade – In addition to naming feelings, we will be able to name one way to feel calm.
2nd grade – We will learn how to use positive self-talk and also understand how we can all feel differently about the same thing.
3rd grade - Identify the different intensities of emotions. Ask students to rate an emotion 1-3
4th grade – We will learn how our brain works and how this affects our emotions. 4th graders recently learned 3 major parts of their brain. Ask them to show you their hand model. J
5th grade- We are learning about strong emotions and how to manage them so that they do not take over our day!

DECEMBER Transportation Department Updates
Inclement Weather Procedures
When inclement weather conditions occur, a decision might be made by the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Superintendent to delay the opening of school by one hour, two hours, to close school, or to dismiss school early. Every effort will be made to announce delays/closings as early as possible. Also, there may be an announcement to delay school openings with a re-evaluation period to possibly close schools. All weather-related announcements will be made through the following media outlets: Wooster radio WQKT 104.5, and WKVX 960 AM will broadcast school delay or closing information. Cancellations/delays will also be reported to WQMX 94.9, WONE 97.3, WNCO 101.3, WAKR 1590 AM, and Cleveland TV stations, Channels 3, 5, 8, and 19. Also, the Norwayne Local Schools Alert system will send out a text, (if you are signed up) as well as post on the Norwayne Local Schools website @ http://www.norwaynelocal.k12.oh.us

Transportation Trivia Question for February: (Look for the answer somewhere in the newsletter)
When should you be at your bus stop in the mornings? Should you wait until the bus pulls up and then start running to your stop?
Student Handbook Talking Points
ILLNESS and FEVER POLICY
Fever policy in the student handbook. Please be sure to review this section along with our other illness policies. We appreciate everyone's flexibility going forward as we navigate the current landscape.- If your child has a fever they must remain out of school for a minimum of 48 hours. They are able to return after these days as long as the last 24 hours they were fever-free without the aid of fever-reducing medication.
DRESS CODE REMINDER
- Tank tops, muscle shirts, bare midriffs, or sleeveless shirts are NOT permitted. Also, socks are to be worn at ALL times, even with sandals.
- With the weather changing, we do go outside for recess as much as possible. We do not have ample extra clothing for students so please ensure your child dresses for the weather appropriately.
OUTDOOR vs INDOOR RECESS
- Now that cold weather has arrived, please be reminded that 20 degrees is the benchmark at which time we look at other weather conditions such as moisture and wind chill to make a decision regarding whether we have indoor or outdoor recess. We may still go out if the real feel is below 20 degrees so please have your child properly dressed for the elements.
ATTENDANCE and UNDERSTANDING ODE LANGUAGE
We are mandated by law to inform parents when students reach different thresholds for absences. Please note that if you receive an attendance letter from the school, we encourage you to call in with any questions to better understand what is going on. We want everyone to be informed and we realize that in our current pandemic some families are required to stay at home which puts them above the allowable absences from ODE. We will continue to work with families on how to help on a case-by-case basis as every scenario could be unique. Please note that missing school whether excused or unexcused still has an impact on a child's education. We will also begin to do this monthly so that we can better keep parents updated on things.
- Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10 percent or more of the school year for any reason. This includes excused and unexcused absences.
- Habitual Truancy is defined as any child of compulsory school age who is absent without legitimate excuse from the public school for thirty or more consecutive hours, forty-two or more hours in one school month, or seventy-two or more hours in one school year. This is different than chronic absenteeism as this only counts absence without legitimate excuses.
- Excessive Absences are defined as a student being absent with a nonmedical excuse for thirty-eight or more hours in one school month, or sixty-five or more hours in a school year.
TRANSPORTATION TRIVIA ANSWER
Answer: No. Be out at the bus stop waiting for the bus at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled stop time. Wait 5 minutes past the scheduled stop time before leaving the stop or calling the transportation office.
2021-2022 NES BREAKFAST and LUNCHES
Norwayne Masks Update as of February 1, 2022
- For the 2021-2022 school year, students/families will have the option to choose what they would like to do with mask-wearing when on Norwayne grounds.
- The two exceptions remain with bus transportation and students who have a positive case in the family but are showing no symptoms. Students will be required to wear masks while being transported on school busses. Students with a positive case in the family with that family member isolating may continue to come to school as long as they are not exhibiting symptoms as long as they wear a mask at all times.
****Please note that we can update the mask stance at any time as we continue to listen and follow mandates from the governor and health departments as new information is made available during the pandemic.
We thank everyone so much for helping comply with all the changes that have taken place. Together we can accomplish so much and continue to make Norwayne amazing!

Have you ever wondered how the breakfast trash cans just seem to “magically” disappear every morning? Well, it is not magic. There are four hardworking fifth graders that move those trash cans for us each day. This month we will highlight those four students.
- Zane Miller enjoys playing soccer, football and basketball. We will often see him playing those sports outside at recess. His favorite subjects are gym and science. JANUARY STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Mrs. Gasser
This is my first year teaching 3rd grade math and science/ social studies. Previously, I was the K-3 intervention specialist. This is my 10th year teaching at Norwyane, but I have always been a Bobcat!
- I love when I'm teaching and I am able to make students laugh and learn at the same time.
- Some of my favorite funny moments are when the whole school gets to dress up on spirit days. Whether it be red and gray day, camo day, wearing pajamas to school, crazy hair day, or neon day. I love going all out and surprising the kids with my spirit.
- Be kind to everyone! You never know who your boss is going to be when you grow up or who you might cross paths with later in life. You will be remembered by how you treated others!
Mrs. Grimes
- 2nd-grade language arts. I was a title tutor for 5 years.
- 14 years
- I love looking back with each student in the spring at their fall scores to see how much they have grown in their reading ability throughout the year.
What is a funny moment during your time at Norwayne?
One year I had a student that rode a battery-powered 4-wheeler to Religious Education. It was my job to make sure it was charged and to get it out of the storage room and have it at the door. One day when I was taking it down the hall, I hit the gas a bit too much. I fell off and landed on my bottom in the middle of the hall.
- Always remember that your mistakes are not something you did wrong, but something that you learned.
Mr. Moore
- I am the head custodian. I have been here just over 2 yrs. This is my first position in Norwayne.
- I love interacting with the students at lunchtime. There are several kindergarteners and 1st graders that I know every day will need help opening the same things. It is such a joy to hear all the please and thank yous from them. It can brighten any day.
- My funniest moment here was probably when trying to get someone's toy off the roof with a long pole. I had every kid on the playground telling me which way to move the end of the stick because I couldn't see it from the ground where I was standing to reach it.
- My advice would be to keep being great bobcats. Keep helping your friends to do better and keep making new friends that can help you. It's always inspiring to see the kids helping each other.
NEW Parent Drop Off and Pick Up for 2021-2022
A few important notes for morning drop off:
Our morning drop-off routine is running very smoothly. Thank you to Officer Hartman and the parents for hopping on the double line-up system allowing us to get more cars in the loop and away from Route 3. Please refer to the picture below in regards to the two-lane system. Parents, please be cognizant of the curb we are acquiring some damage as tires grind against the concrete.
- Students being dropped off or riding their bikes will be allowed to enter the building at 8:40 am, as we did last year. They will not be permitted to stand outside and wait for the cafeteria doors to open.
- During the morning drop-off time, when exiting the parking lot, cars will only be allowed to make a right-hand turn. This is something we did last year, and it helped reduce the congestion and improve the flow of traffic.
- We ask that you do not park in the drop-off loop. If you need to park to bring something to the office or walk your child to the door, this needs to occur in the parking spaces. This way, the loop will not become clogged as it is a single-car loop.
- Students are able to exit their cars only if they are parked along the curb. Please do not get out of the car in the grass at this time. Use the crosswalk as the cut-off for now.
- Please make sure to pull all the way up so we can ensure we get as many cars on the curb as possible.
A few important notes for parent pick up:
We would like the parents to know we appreciate your patience in the afternoon as the afternoon pick-up crew works tirelessly to ensure we have a quick, efficient, and above all else safe system in place for the children. We are averaging 70+ cars at the end of the day can you believe that! Parents, please be cognizant of the curb we are acquiring some damage as tires grind against the concrete.
- Pick-up will occur as it has in the past, except for the one-direction loop we will now have.
- We ask parents to remain in their cars as staff will walk students to their cars to ensure safety.
- During pick-up times, cars will only be able to make a right-hand turn when exiting the parking lot. Again this helps with reducing congestion and improving the flow of traffic.
- As you drive by the crosswalk please have your window down to let Mrs. Knight or one of the other workers know who you are there to pick up.
- We appreciate the parents working quickly to help buckle their children.

PLEASE MAKE SURE WHEN DROPPING OFF OR PICKING UP IN THE LOOP YOUR CAR REMAINS IN PARK UNTIL YOUR CHILD HAS FULLY EXITED THE VEHICLE AND WALKED BY YOU ON THE CONCRETE CURB.
