Pittsfield Penguin News
March 2020
Greetings Pittsfield CommUNITY,
March is Reading Month (MIRM) and it has arrived at last! In the words of Dr. Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” We will go far, very far with our MIRM theme, “Reading is Our Super Power!” When you come by the school, you’ll be amazed at all of the door decorations inspired by our favorite stories and authors.
The month of March is filled with multiple magnificent events. Let’s see what we’re marching into…
March is Reading Month (MIRM)
Every day during the month of March, there is an activity that you and the entire family can participate in to stretch our curious minds into the joys of reading. The MIRM Calendar, which was also sent home via backpack mail last week, is full of reading activities. Some of the fun activities include BUILD a fort to read in, DRESS like a book character, and WEAR a shirt with words on it. Cheerfully, we bring back Storybooks at Starbucks on Saturdays (3/7, 3/14 and 3/21) 10:00-11:30 a.m. at 3650 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. This is a FREE reading event where you will receive a FREE Book and FREE Hot Cocoa! Yes, that’s right FREE! Join us while we read, mingle and get a cup of hot cocoa.
We are pleased to announce that we will once again have an Author Assembly. This year’s author is Phyliss Russell-Gilmer, https://phylliswrites.com/. She will be reading Skin Deep, A Child’s Story. See https://phylliswrites.com/skin-deep for more information. There will be a lower and upper grade assembly on March 19th in the Multipurpose Room. The K-2 Assembly is 2:30-2:45 p.m. and 3-5 Assembly is 3:00-3:15 p.m.

The 5th grade students will transition to their 6th grade feeder school, which is Scarlett Middle School for an afternoon of learning, meet & greets, and touring buildings. Please try to avoid scheduling appointments during the day (dentist/doctor) that conflicts with transition day activities. Missing these activities will make it challenging to provide individual students with the same information and experience at a later date.
5th Grade Camp
Camp time!! Our 5th grade kiddos will be going to camp in two months, May 13th-15th. Camp packets will be sent home this week via backpack mail. Please review the information and return the forms as soon as possible to your child’s teacher, Mrs. Miller or Mrs. Snadon.
Coronavirus COVID-19 Update
The safety of health for our students, staff and families is our priority. As of today, there are no reported cases of coronavirus in Michigan. The National Public Radio (NPR) developed a comic to help explain the coronavirus to kids. Here’s a link that might be of interest to you that I shared with my own boys, https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/02/28/809580453/just-for-kids-a-comic-exploring-the-new-coronavirus.
Let’s continue good communicable disease prevention and control practices at Pittsfield. Specifically, to prevent the spread of viruses such as the flu, common cold and coronavirus:
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If not available, use hand sanitizer. We will encourage all students to wash their hands before eating lunch or snacks.
We will encourage staff and students to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands and to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing.
Here’s a helpful reminder and guidelines to determine when to keep your child at home when they are sick according to WCHD. Please note: for these guidelines a child should not return until 24 hours of these symptoms unless a healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. Be sure to check out these guidelines http://bit.ly/WhenToStay with detailed information. In short, here are the guidelines:
Fever: a temperature of 101°F or greater.
Diarrhea
Vomiting: a child that has vomited two or more times.
Rash: any rash illness and fever should be checked out by a healthcare provider.
Skin sores: A child with weeping sores on an exposed area that cannot be covered with waterproof dressing
Certain communicable diseases

Saludos Pittsfield CommUNITY,
