September Newsletter 2015
Chestatee Elementary School
A Letter From Mrs. Tennies, Our Principal
Dear Families of Chestatee,
Welcome September! My Northern friends are amazed that we have been at the business of school for over a month. I hope this year began with a smooth start for your family. One of the most important pieces of a beginning school year is to establish a feeling of community in the classroom. Learning becomes very meaningful in a social, collaborative classroom. At Chestatee, we strive to create that feeling of working together.
This year we are excited to be able to offer our students The 7 Mindsets. This is a joint project with our partner elementary schools and feeder middle and high schools. In all nine schools in Forsyth County are working together to bring this program to students. The program will be used for our weekly class meetings at Chestatee and features seven mindsets that successful and happy people maintain. Building resilience and perseverance in children is a necessary skill in today’s society. A growth mindset has been attributed to personal achievement. You are welcome to learn more about the program by accessing the website. http://7mindsets.com
Our first mindset explored in the month of September will be We are Connected.
We want to empower kids to work well together. Look to hear more about The 7 Mindsets as the year progresses. Our counselors, Ms Bryant (K-2) and Ms Cox (3-5), are excellent resources at the school regarding the program.
The 7 Mindsets:
We are connected
Everything is possible
Live to Give

Attitude of Gratitude
Let’s plan to connect on campus, through our webpage, or with Facebook soon,

News From our Parent Involvement Coordinator
Hi! I'm Meg Killingsworth, and I'm your parent involvement coordinator.
This is my 13th year at Chestatee, but my first year as your Parent Involvement Coordinator. I am a proud teacher and parent at Chestatee. I’m looking so forward to serving you and your family this year! In my first month of this position, here are the top 6 questions asked by families.
Your Top 6 Questions and our Answers about Title 1
6. What does Title I mean?
What is Title I? Title I is a federally funded program that is intended to supplement the regular classroom curriculum. Students are provided extra assistance by highly qualified teachers in reading and/or math. The program's goal is to support students, so that every child meets and/or exceeds the state's standards. A variety of teaching methods and materials are used to reinforce curriculum concepts.
What does school-wide Title I mean? A school-wide Title I program ensures the success of all Chestatee students. Everyone has access to the numerous resources and materials purchased with Title I funds, including iPods, laptops, computer programs, books, manipulatives, and learning games.
You can find more information on our Chestatee webpage under “Student Services” or at this link: http://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/domain/4166
5. What is a parent involvement coordinator?
A parent involvement coordinator, otherwise known as a PIC, is a teacher who provides resources in our parent resource room, plans Title I Family Nights, holds parent trainings, and provides access to give feedback through our Parent Advisory Committee. At Chestatee, the parent involvement coordinator supports teachers and serves students by teaching small groups. Family engagement is key in Title I schools and the PIC helps support and connect families and the school.
4. What is the parent resource room? Why do we have it?
The parent resource room (room 302) is a beautiful place (two doors past the media center headed to the gym) where parents can come grab a cup of coffee and check out materials to help their children at home. It saves a trip to a teacher store and saves lots of money as the room is filled with hundreds of engaging games, books, flash cards, Leap pads, and other technology based resources. The items were selected by teachers because they have proven to be effective and engaging. If you need help finding materials, the parent involvement coordinator is here to help. If I am out of the room, leave me a note. I can pull materials and send them home with your child. We are able to have this room because of Title I funding specifically set aside for parent involvement. This room is yet another benefit of being at a Title I school!
3. Can I check out materials from the parent resource room if no one is in there?
Yes! Come on in! I may be out and about teaching children or supporting staff, but you are always welcome. Come on in between 7:00 and 3:30 any day. The directions for signing out are in the room. Grab a cup of coffee or hot tea and browse the room.
2. My child isn't served by Title I? Can I use the parent resource room?
Yes! The parent resource room is for all Chestatee families! It is a major benefit to our students because there are materials that are selected by teachers and are proven to be effective and engaging. If your child's teacher asks you to work on a specific skill, come on by and check out something for that skill. If your child needs enriching, come on by and check out something that is a grade or two above your child’s grade level. This room is for you!
1. The Title I Family Nights sound fun. Can all of the families come to these or just families served by Title I?
All families are invited to our Title I Family Nights. Because we are a Title I school, we offer nights to promote school and home connections. Because the time falls at the dinner hour, we offer free pizza purchased with school funds. We also provide childcare for younger siblings. Childcare and translators will be at every Title I family night.
Mark your calendar for 6 PM on the following dates. You won't want to miss the fun…
November 12th: Technology in the Classroom
January 14th: Math Tools and Games
February 18th: Literacy Night
March 22nd: Science Night
May 12th: Title I Planning Night
