News from Covedale's Workshops

Fall 2015

On This Spot

In the warm days of the beginning of the school year, each student in the workshop classes chose a spot on the lawn in front of the school to study. They documented the living things, noted sights, sounds, and smells, and collected samples.

As the days grew shorter they collected leaves and revisited the spots, noting changes. They identified trees, finding common and Latin names.

Students created their own herbaria containing labeled collections of leaf specimens. They inked leaves and did rubbings to understand leaf structures, making rice paper covers for the folders.

Enjoy the collections. They should last for many years if kept in a cool, dry place.

In the spring, we'll use our research results to label the trees and shrubs around the school.

Interview an Elder

Please use some holiday family time and ask questions of family members. Some suggested questions are attached, but adapt and create your own. Young children may need help recording the answers. You may want to use video, photographs, or voice recordings. Check out the Blendspace above for more ideas. We'll use these in early January 2016.
