SUMMER SCHOOL ENROLLMENT OPPORTUNITY
NOTE FROM THE ADMIN.....Virtual Summer School - Enrollment Information - Elementary Schools
We are excited about the opportunity to provide a virtual summer school during the month of June. Although we have missed our students dearly and are disappointed we cannot have in-seat summer school, the Launch virtual program we will be using has a rigorous curriculum that is aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards. It is currently used by 270 districts and almost 600,000 students across the State of Missouri. We are confident the learning opportunities provided this summer will meet the various needs of our students.
You have likely received a letter by now from the District which provides a general overview of Summer School Enrollment. Within that letter is a link to a web page on our District website that provides a link to the Launch course catalog, a link to the Launch enrollment form, and links to relevant Launch materials. We hope this information will help guide you and answer any questions you may have. Additionally, we have provided a summary below for each grade span for your convenience.
For Students Entering Grades 1-5:
Students will enroll in “Your National Parks Adventure” Course
Adaptive summer learning academies built into the course that develop reading and math skills utilizing MO Learning Standards
Includes engaging and motivating learning opportunities in science, social studies, fine arts and physical education
Students progress through the daily work and earn digital badges as they complete coursework. The course is very easy for young students to navigate.
Coursework does not require parental assistance.
Opportunities for daily 1:1 tutoring, small group virtual instruction, class meetings
Daily communication online with the students by the assigned teacher
For Students Entering 6th Grade
Students will be enrolled in two courses, which is considered full-time summer school enrollment
Students will select one Enrichment course.

Game On!
Operation Innovation

For the second course, building staff will assign you to one of the following Summer Academies. These courses are adaptive to each student’s skill set and are game-based with purposeful practice and engaging activities. Each course keeps the learning momentum going during the summer and prepares each student for their next class in either Reading or Math.

Many families, including our teacher/staff families, experienced incredible challenges during this time, but our resilience and commitment to excellence has and will continue to make us STRONGER TOGETHER. We could not have done this without your support.
We hope our students will remain committed to their education by enrolling in the Launch Summer School program! If you have questions about the enrollment process please contact:

INFORMATION REGARDING SUMMER SCHOOL AND STUDENTS WITH INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PLANS
As announced on Monday, the Jefferson City School District will be offering 2020 summer school through a virtual platform instead of in buildings. Although the stay at home order has been lifted, in-seat educational opportunities in June was not a viable option even for small amounts of students due to the strict social distancing guidelines that would need to be in place. Many of our special education services require direct contact between students/staff. In addition, many of our students have medical conditions which make them more vulnerable during this time. The safety of our students is our top priority. I want to assure you that we are continuing to do our best to plan for and support each child. I have provided some additional information below about our summer school options and hope to answer some questions about how students with unique learning needs may participate in this program.
We will be partnering with Launch which utilizes a Missouri curriculum and is staffed by certified educators who live and work in partner districts, including our own. The Launch program will be offered from June 3-30 and is available for students entering grades 1-12 at the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The Launch program will replace our typical in-seat summer school option and all students are encouraged to participate.
Although Launch does not provide special education services, the program is still a great option for students with disabilities to receive quality instruction. Launch has numerous options for remediation and many of their courses are adapted to the student’s skill level. For example, their Summer Academies programs and the Elementary National Park Adventure programs are all adaptive programs that are designed to provide instruction targeted to a student's individual level.
Launch teachers will also be implementing the necessary accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities. When students with disabilities enroll in the Launch program, a copy of the student’s IEP or 504 will be sent directly to the student's teacher. This will allow your student’s Launch teacher to be aware of your student’s unique strengths and challenges so that they can tailor their instruction to meet their needs. For additional information about Launch or the summer school enrollment process, please visit our district summer school page at http://bit.ly/JCSummerSchool.
The current circumstances can be challenging for students, parents, and staff. We appreciate your partnership and will continue to adjust our efforts to meet the needs of this unique situation as well as your student’s needs. We are actively looking for ways to increase our distance learning options for students with disabilities while also preparing for the safest way to offer in-seat learning again as soon as possible.

INFORMATION REGARDING SUMMER SCHOOL AND STUDENTS WITH INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PLANS THAT ALSO QUALIFY FOR EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR SERVICES UNDER THAT PLAN

In addition to the general education instruction provided by Launch, we will be providing distance learning activities for students who already have ESY services outlined within their IEP. Although Launch is encouraged, students are not required to participate in Launch in order to get ESY services through the district. Case managers and various staff will be contacting families of students with ESY services next week to get their input about what types of activities are working well for the student and how we can best tailor our ESY services to meet the unique needs of your child. In addition to the parent input, we are also recommending the following options for services during ESY:
● For students that are enrolled in the Launch program and also receive academic ESY services, our JC Schools special education teachers will serve as a
Teacher’s Assistant in Launch course. This will allow them to be aware of the content and progress of your student while also tailoring their own instruction to meet your student’s IEP goals.
● Instructional opportunities focused on the students ESY goals will be provided. This may be done via mailed packets, electronic materials, videos, etc.
● ESY staff will be expected to provide at least weekly contact with a student via phone or Google Meet, etc. in order to provide services as well as answer any questions regarding instructional materials that have been sent.
● For students within self-contained programs, we are piloting a program that will provide electronic learning materials. Teachers of self-contained programs will be sending instructional activities to support goals and checking in daily.
In order to adequately plan for ESY services, we would like to know who plans on attending and also whether or not your student will be participating in the Launch program. We would appreciate it if you would click on the following link https://forms.gle/5uvzNHcgM8fNSZDN6 and answer four questions that will assist in our planning/implementation of summer school.
If you have questions about the ESY options or services, please contact: ➢ Elementary: Jennifer Stone via email (jennifer.stone@jcschools.us) ➢ Secondary: Jacqueline Bowles via email (jacqueline.bowles@jcschools.us) ➢ Special Education Coordinator: Caryl Smarr via email (caryl.smarr@jcschools.us) ➢ Special Programs Coordinator: Susie Register via email (susie.register@jcshools.us)
