Sherwood Spirit
June 2018
From Mr. Walerstein's Desk...
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We have come to the end of another school year at Sherwood. This has been a successful year in many regards. We have had success in academics, in social-emotional learning, in service learning, in the arts, and in many other areas as well! I can say with all confidence that our students have grown because of their experiences.
This year, the students were able to go on field trips to many varied places, and learn a lot about history, their community, and themselves. Students traveled to Brookhaven National Laboratory, Old Bethpage Village, and the Suffolk County Police Headquarters. The students also got to go on some fun trips to Mangoes, Adventureland, and some classes did Buddy Bowling.
This year we also began to learn about The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. These habits are useful for students now, and will be throughout their lives as well. It is important to us that the skills we teach transcend school. With that in mind, in June, we will be learning about Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. To "sharpen the saw" means to take care of yourself, and to become the best person you can be in every way. This month, students will be learning about Habit 7 in physical education class and "sharpening their saws" during Field Day on June 13.
This month, we bid farewell to our fifth graders of the Class of 2018. Our 5th graders will celebrate with a trip to Adventureland on June 14; a BBQ on June 18; and the month will culminate with the Moving-Up Ceremony on June 20 at 9:30 a.m.
This month we will also be bidding farewell to Ms. Bauernfeind who will be retiring at the end of the school year. Ms. Bauernfeind has been a part of the Sherwood family for many years, and she will now be spending her time with her own children and grandchildren. We wish Ms. Bauernfeind the best of luck in her retirement!
We also say goodbye to our Superintendent of the last ten year, Ms. Schnebel. After 10 years in Islip, she will also be moving on to spend time with her family in retirement. Her dedication to the children and greater community of Islip will be missed.
We enter the summer with some great memories, but we look forward to beginning all over again in September. We wish all of the members of the Sherwood family a safe, healthy, and restful summer.
See you soon!
Warmest Regards,
Chad Walerstein

From the Reading Room
Children, who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward. Reading research indicates that children’s reading ability declines between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next; however, this can be prevented by having your child READ! READ! READ!
Some suggestions for summer reading programs that offer incentives for reading include:
• Islip Public Library has a reading program. Participation is free and there are added incentives. http://www.isliplibrary.org/
• Barnes & Noble summer reading program gives children an opportunity to earn a free book. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/summer-reading/379003570/
• Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online program designed to motivate kids to read as they log minutes they spend reading to earn rewards and help read for the world record. http://www.scholastic.com/ups/campaigns/src-2018/parent
Thank you for your ongoing support! Enjoy the summer!

From Mr. LeVien's Room
For the 8th consecutive year, Sherwood has partnered with Seatuck to help reintroduce Northern Bobwhite quail back to Long Island. Sherwood welcomed 16 baby quail on May 27th. The chicks will stay at SHERWOOD for two weeks and will then be sent to Seatuck. It is the hope that eventually these birds will become native once again to Long Island.

HEALTH TIPS FROM ANN MARIE FERRY, R.N.
SUMMER SUN
· UV rays are strongest in the middle of the day. Plan indoor activities at that time, or look for shade to prevent sunburn.
· Cover the skin with a shirt AND sunscreen to avoid sunburn!
· Wear a hat—preferably one that covers the neck and ears. When wearing a baseball style hat, remember to apply sunscreen to neck and ears.
· Sunglasses protect eyes from UV rays. Look for ones that wrap around and block nearly 100% of UV rays.
· Use sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 and UVA/UVB protection.
HEAD LICE ALERT
Head lice reach a peak time for infestation during the summer because of overnight camps, slumber parties, and vacations. Consider checking your child’s head for the presence of lice regularly during the summer and several times the week before school reopens.
BICYCLE SAFETY
Most children don’t enjoy wearing a helmet, and unfortunately many parents don’t insist that they wear one every time they get on their bike, hop on their skateboard, or strap on their rollerblades. Make sure your children understand the role a helmet plays in protecting their head, brain, and possibly even their future.
New habits can be hard to establish. By starting the helmet habit with your children from the first time they climb on a tricycle, you can establish an automatic habit for your child.
PROTECT AGAINST TICKS
From May through July, people get tick bites more often than any other time of the year.
· Tick borne disease can cause mild symptoms to severe infections requiring hospitalization. The most common symptoms of tick-related illnesses can include fever/chills, aches and pains and rash. Early recognition and treatment of the infection decreases the risk of serious complications, so see your doctor immediately if you have been bitten by a tick and experience any of these symptoms.
· Avoid areas with high grass and walk in the center of trails when hiking.
· Conduct a full body check upon returning from tick-infested areas.
HAVE A SAFE AND HEALTHY SUMMER!
