Kicking off a new year!
We had wonderful attendance at our summer library and kids have been reading all summer! We circulated 2,170 books from May 30 to August 11! Yea! Thanks to everyone to stopped by! We have circulated 5822 books since school started! :) Yea, Readers!
In the first week had overview lessons and the next week we started lessons integrating classroom curriculum. We are mostly working with choosing good books, knowing about fiction and nonfiction genres and learning how to be in the library. We are starting maps with first and fourth grade social studies, too. Our goal is to help kids with learning in the areas of reading, information skills and technology by working with teachers through their curriculum.
We will begin our reading incentives by introducing students to the 2x2 Program for grades K-2 and Bluebonnet Program for grades 3-5. More information is found on the library website under reading incentives.
Soon, we will begin our Biblionasium program, our reading incentive program for K-2. Information will be forthcoming soon. My hope is we'll be ready to go within two weeks. We will begin that program for students in grades K-2. Biblionasium is a program where students read books and respond to books and it connects with our Destiny checkout system. The program will keep track of the number of books read and prizes will be awarded based on number of books read. The login will be their six digit student number and the password will be their first initial, last initial, year of birth, plus two zeros. (example: ap201100) More information is also found on the website, but feel free to email if you have any questions or if we can help in any way!
Scholastic Book Fair is coming in the fall! We will be open October 4-10th! Please email us if you'd like to volunteer in the fair! We're very excited to have a fall fair!
We welcome parents! We invite you to get a "parent account" that allows you to check out ten books to read with your children at home for two weeks at a time. Students in first through fifth grade are allowed two books at a time. You are also welcome to send a note to us, giving permission for your child to check out up to five extra books in your name after you've created an account.
We also invite you to volunteer in the library to be a part of the learning that's happening and help keep things up and running. Stop in any time and let us know you're interested and we'll get you trained and started! It's a great place to hang out! :) Our Bookfair will be Oct. 3-10th, too, and we'll need LOTS of help for that!
Our REACH Reading Program is designed for students in grades K-2 who are struggling with reading. Please let me know if you are interested in reading with a child one day a week for a half hour (or two for an hour!). It makes a huge difference to these students and it's fun!
My contact information is aphipps@alvinisd.net and the phone number into the library is 281-245-3241. Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you now and throughout the year!
Blue-bonnet Program
Grades 3-5
Students read 5-20 books chosen by librarians across Texas and fill out form to turn into their teacher. Students receive a trophy for reading 15 books in 3rd grade, 17 books in 4th grade and all 20 books in 5th grade in May and students who read 5-20 books attend the Bluebonnet party in May. Voting in the state contest occurs in January and students must have read 5 books to vote.
2x2 Program
Kindergarten students read 10 books and first and second grade students read 20 books chosen by librarians across Texas and fill out a form.
There is an ice-cream party for the students who read these books by mid-April as a reward.
