Avalon School Parent Newsletter
Vol. 1 September 2018
Welcome Back!
The start of school is always a time for a "New Year," celebration. In education, September is the time to celebrate a new start, different teachers, different classmates, or a new grade level. The start of a new school year is always an exciting time for students and teachers alike. This year at Avalon School we are focused on implementing several new initiatives.
Elementary students will have a new physical education program under the direction of Erica Minuto. In addition, students will be exposed to additional technology opportunities, as we will have a chromebook for every student to use throughout the school day.
Secondary students will have the opportunity to participate in the Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation program. Students will be introduced to career skills and training necessary for employment within our local tourism industry.
Over the summer, teachers, students, and parents participated in Restorative Justice Training. This process will be utilized throughout the school to determine factors that lead to student behaviors, determine workable replacement behaviors, and assist all stakeholders in monitoring and adjusting the replacement behaviors for an improved school climate.
We are excited for the start of the new year and look forward to observing growth in all our wonderful students at Avalon School. Please feel free to stop by the office should you have any questions regarding our school programs.
New To Avalon
"Learning is a lifelong adventure. If a teacher instills an attitude of learning in their student, the student will have a desire to learn the material that is being presented."
" My role as a teacher is one of significance, as I am teaching my students curriculum, standards, concepts, how to communicate with others or share their own feelings effectively. "
" I truly believe the foundation of every great teacher, starts with an individual who loves to learn. "
"I teach to instill a love of learning and positive thinking in students as well as a deep and working understanding of empathy and kindness to the point of practicing it in their daily lives."
Mariner's Outreach Foundation sponsors Field Trips Overtown
Each year the Mariner's Outreach Foundation funds several field trips to the mainland. Each with a specific educational focus. These trips expose Avalon students to the variety of cultural institutions regularly visited by students that attend other LBUSD schools. For each trip the Mariner's pay for the boat ticket, bus, museum admission and provide a sack lunch. This year, in addition to the 11th Grade trip to the Museum of Tolerance, we will have a 6th Grade excursion to the California Science Center to see the King Tut exhibit, a 7th Grade trip to the Autry Museum of the American West and Griffith Observatory, and a 4th Grade trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific. Additional trips for the spring are being planned for: Grade 5 to Page Museum, AVID College visit, and a subject specific trip to JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratories), Sophomore trip to USS Iowa.
