Eagle Point School District 9
News & Updates that impact our community. October 2021
Community Connection
School Board Vice Chair, Randy Wolf, hosts onsite learning for Eagle Point High School Vet Medicine and Animal Anatomy students. Brian Wolf (brother) and Pam Pratt ventured to Eagle Point on Friday, September 24th from Lassen Community College to educate students with a hands-on field lesson.
Eagle Point High School teacher, Traci Dulany, took her Vet Medicine and Animal Anatomy classes to the onsite learning lesson that included ultrasound, vaccinations and deworming. The ultrasound was utilized to determine if the animal was pregnant and how far along she was. A total of 18 students were able to participate in the work session.
Taylor, an EPHS student, made a discovery on the ultrasound machine when her turn came. “I found something!” she screamed out with excitement. Taylor said during a short interview that she believes "this is the most live teaching experience you can take. It helps me determine what to do in the future." Taylor has always loved agricultural life and plans to be an Agricultural teacher or swine breeder as her post graduation career.
Providing Innovative Career Pathways for All Students
Bryan and Ruben are two former EPHS students who found careers at Croman Corporation-- thanks to the program available at EPHS for skill development lead by teacher/advisor, Mr. Daniel Langston. When interviewed, Bryan and Ruben said, "Mr. Langston is the only reason why I am here today, he really supports the students."
Rubens interest was first in the aeronautical side of Croman, however, he found his passion working in the truck yard as a mechanic and recently obtained his CDL. Ruben has been out driving truck for fire support and really enjoys the vast array of people he gets to interact with.
Bryan recently started with Croman Corp and is pleased that he made the change. The last job he had didn't provide much room to grow and he felt like it was kind of a dead-end job. Bryan likes the fact that Croman provides opportunities to grow within the company and is on that path already.
Maximizing Opportunities for Students
A group of Eagle Point High School Juniors and Seniors attended the Southern Oregon Trade Careers Expo, held at Seven Feathers Convention Center in Canyonville, September 28th.
Trade and industrial careers in today’s market include high-tech and great earning potential. This event was organized to introduce attendees to exciting opportunities in many arenas: Aviation, Rail, Archeology, Architecture, Engineering, Geology, Survey, Carpenters, Cement Masons, Heavy Equipment Operators, Diesel Engine Repairers, Welders, Plumbers, Pipefitters, Steamfitters, Iron Workers, Skilled Laborers, Wild Land Fire Fighting and more.
EPHS student, Hunter had the opportunity to speak with employers in his desired profession. Hunter said, “The convention was super fun and it opened my eyes to what I want to do.” Hunter wants to be a lineman, working with power-lines and he was able to obtain valuable information about the industry, along with hands-on learning.
Rylie, EPHS student participant, is not 100% sure what she wants to do yet for a career. She reported, “The show opened my eyes to a lot of different options and pathways.” The show had 20 - 30 vendors and Rylie was able to interact with the ones that caught her interest. She was very happy to be able to participate in such a great opportunity and experience.
Josh, like his friend, Hunter, thought the event was great too and explored multiple directions for his future career.
In addition to the individual conversations with Rylie, Hunter and Josh, I also had the opportunity to interview a larger group of students collectively. Every student felt the event was worth their time and beneficial in some way to defining a future career. Several students found a new perspective and career path after they had richer conversations with several vendors. One student reported that he was set on a specific job field until he had a more in depth conversation and decided to go a completely different direction. Every student was grateful for the opportunity and feel they are more confident about their post graduation options.

Table Rock Elementary Continues to Support Social Emotional Learning for All Students
Social Emotional Learning at Table Rock Elementary (TRE) has several components. Character Strong is the program, Purposeful People is the curriculum, CASEL is our framework of standards and Panorama is the assessment that we use for diagnosis and evaluation. This program as a whole allows TRE to obtain a clearer picture of where students are needing improvement and provide pathways for success.
Principal Valerie Shehorn reported, "TRE was the pilot school for the Character Strong program last year. That program is now implemented at all District 9 schools!"
TRE has landed on a focus of Self-Awareness for this quarter with these two topics, Positive Feelings and Growth Mindset. Aligning the two topics with CASEL's Core Competencies, TRE determined they are both aligned with Self-Awareness.
What is CASEL Self-Awareness?
SELF-AWARENESS: The abilities to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts. This includes capacities to recognize one’s strengths and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose. Such as:
• Integrating personal and social identities
• Identifying personal, cultural, and linguistic assets
• Identifying one’s emotions
• Demonstrating honesty and integrity
• Linking feelings, values, and thoughts
• Examining prejudices and biases
• Experiencing self-efficacy
• Having a growth mindset
• Developing interests and a sense of purpose
