HOLIDAY SEASON READING!
The holiday season is a magical time filled with twinkling lights, the scent of freshly baked cookies, and the warmth of family traditions. While middle schoolers may seem beyond the age for picture books, there's an undeniable charm in embracing the whimsy and wonder of holiday picture books during this festive time. In this article, we'll explore why reading holiday picture books is a delightful and enriching activity for middle schoolers, and recommend some enchanting titles that capture the spirit of the season.
Nostalgia and Bonding:
Holiday picture books have a unique ability to evoke nostalgia and create a sense of togetherness. Reading these books with family or friends can become a cherished holiday tradition, providing an opportunity for middle schoolers to connect with loved ones and share the joy of storytelling. The simple act of revisiting childhood favorites or exploring new tales can be a heartwarming experience that bridges generations.
Exploring Themes of Generosity and Kindness:
Many holiday picture books carry timeless messages of generosity, kindness, and the spirit of giving. These themes resonate with middle schoolers navigating the complexities of adolescence. Through heartwarming stories and relatable characters, these books can impart valuable lessons about empathy, compassion, and the importance of spreading joy during the holiday season.
Celebrating Diversity and Traditions:
Holiday picture books often showcase a rich tapestry of cultural traditions and celebrations. Exploring stories from around the world introduces middle schoolers to the diversity of holiday customs, fostering an appreciation for different cultures and expanding their worldview. This cultural exploration can be both educational and entertaining, providing a window into the global tapestry of holiday festivities.
Recommended Holiday Picture Books for Middle Schoolers:
"The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg:
A timeless classic that follows a young boy's magical journey to the North Pole on Christmas Eve, emphasizing the spirit of belief and wonder.
"How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" by Dr. Seuss:
The iconic tale of the Grinch's transformation from a holiday hater to a symbol of love and generosity.
"The Nutcracker" by E.T.A. Hoffmann, retold by Susan Jeffers:
A beautifully illustrated retelling of the classic ballet, bringing the enchanting world of the Nutcracker to life.
In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, taking a moment to share the enchantment of holiday picture books with middle schoolers can create lasting memories and instill the true spirit of the season. These books not only offer a delightful escape but also provide valuable lessons, foster imagination, and strengthen bonds with loved ones. So, grab a cozy blanket, find a comfortable reading nook, and let the magic of holiday picture books add an extra dose of joy to this special time of year.

STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL
If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.
HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL
If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
In addition to District Social Media, local TV/Radio stations and the District Website, HSSD will also send weather-related delays and cancellations via text message.
