NBMS Gifted and Talented

September 2016

Welcome Back!

Thank you to all who came to the GT Open House meetings a few weeks ago. If you were unable to attend, we will be sharing monthly newsletters in an effort to keep parents up-to-date and informed about everything going on in GT this school year. We are looking forward to a fun year filled with exploration, self-discovery and many new opportunities!

Project Based Learning is coming to NBISD! Many teachers on each campus throughout the district have been trained on PBL and how to implement those projects in the classroom. This is especially important in our gifted advisory classes since PBL has been a part of our curriculum for many years. When your child works on a project we want them to be invested in it, as well as allow them to use their strengths and areas of giftedness. That is why we are working on projects being targeted towards two different content areas: STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and Humanities (ELA, social studies). Your child will either have the option to do those projects in their desired content area only or will do at least one this school year either in the fall or the spring. There will be two projects this school year total: one fall, one spring and evaluations sent home for both.

6th Grade

6th graders have been busy working on their communication skills. They have been participating in an activity called Nuclear Waste that challenged students to collaborate and communicate effectively. The goal was to move the "nuclear waste" (tennis ball) from one point to another. Students had obstacles to overcome as they not only steered clear of tables, but communication obstacles as well.

7th Grade

7th grade GT students are currently writing essays to enter into the Patriot's Pen Essay competition hosted by the VFW. Mrs. Zaleski has been working with students to teach them about the district databases to utilize when producing their iMovie Essay Trailers. These trailers will become moving visual tributes to reveal "The America I Believe In" from each students' unique perspective.

8th Grade

8th graders have been busy creating "My Greatest Hits" Albums. They searched for songs that represented what they are passionate about and then designed album covers and records to express those passions. Ask your kiddos about their song choices and read those album dedications carefully. Apparently, our 8th graders have a deep appreciation and love for all you family members!
