Welcome to the First Edition of the school counselors’ newsletter. Inside you will find News, Upcoming Events and Helpful Tips on topics related to the school counselors office. We will publish a few throughout the school year. Hopefully, you will find the information helpful and informative.
UPCOMING EVENTS
October 28 - Term 1 Grading period Ends.
October 28 - Alternatives to Drugs Activity.
November 11 - Term 1 Report Cards posted in Family Access.
WHMS Student Assistance Program is organizing Red Ribbon Week October 24-28. The students will celebrate being drug free with contests, dress up days, activities and guest speakers. Dress up days for the week will be:
Monday - Wear Red
Tuesday - “Team up Against Drugs” Students wear your favorite team shirt
Wednesday - “I am too bright to do Drugs” Students wear neon or bright colors
Thursday - “Say Boo to Drugs” Students wear a Halloween themed shirt or Black and/or Orange “I am too bright to do Drugs” Students wear neon or bright colors
Friday - “Drugs Stink Wear Pink”- To follow the “Pink Out” theme scheduled for Friday's Spartan football game.
On the afternoon of Friday the 28th of Red Ribbon Week, the students will attend two “Alternatives to Drugs” teacher sponsored activities. Students will have the opportunity to choose they activities they think they would enjoy the most. An activity could include being outside, It is suggested that students dress for the weather.
NEWS
On Friday September 23rd WHMS held the 2022 -2023 Bully Prevention Kickoff event. The students spent the afternoon with their advisory teams competing against each other in the Amazing Race. Here is a link to a slideshow. The Advisory teams needed to work together to complete up to as many as 15 challenges. The top 3 finishers of the event were rewarded with a pancake breakfast and the Term 1 Principal’s Cup. The Term 2 Principal’s cup will be awarded to the three Advisory Teams that have the largest average improvement in their GPA.Thank you to all the parents who signed up to volunteer and help with this event.
HELPFUL TIPS
Most of you have probably logged into skyward to look at grades, send in in absence excuse or update contact information. Skyward is also a great way to see if your child is missing assignments. This link will show you how to see if your child has any missing assignments. I will also show you for each of their classes, grades they have recieved for anything graded in each the courses.
The Sendit App This link will give you a review of a popular anonymous app some children are using. This review was done by Ryan Klingensmith. He has a very helpful website and newsletter Shape the Sky We believe you will find the information he provides to be a valuable resource for keeping up to date with technology your children may be using. We will include his reports and reviews in this newsletter. We also include his information on our website. Here is a link to to past reports we have listed on our Social Media Resources page.
Kids being asked to be "Sugar Babies" on Tellonym - Here is another review by Shape the Sky on the app Tellonym. Tellonym allows for anonymous messaging on IOS and Android. The app name is a combination of “Tell” and “Anonym” (which is German for anonymously). The app was created by three teenaged students in Germany.
