Genetically Modified Animals
Madison Lovingood and Amber Norris
What are GMAs?
GMA's (Genetically Modified Animals) are created by the process of inserting certain genes into an animal to create desired characteristics.
Specifics:
Provides-
- Advances in human health
- reduced environmental impact
- improved quality of life for animals
- improvement of industrial products
Featherless Chickens
They would grow faster which would supposedly improve the meat quality and make it cheaper for producers.
Web-Spinning Goats
Web spinning goats can create silk like spiders. Their silk can be used for medical purposes, potentially bulletproof vests and improved car air bags.
Bunny crossed with a cat?
Although this may or may not be real, it shows the overlying concept behind GMAs. Humans wanted this cross because they thought it would be cute, so they made it happen. Scientists do crosses to make animals that will benefit humans.
Why are GMAs important and how do we use them?
Scientist genetically modify animals to get certain traits out of them that cause them to be more appealing and more useful for certain needs.
Technology Needed
In order to create animals with certain traits, scientist use modern technology called transgenesis (transfer of genetic material from one organism to another).
