SENIOR GIRLS ARE THE POWDER PUFF CHAMPS!
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
This past Friday was the annual Powder Puff Games where the girls play flag football and the boys are the cheerleaders. The pep rally and the games are a great way to end Red Ribbon/Spirit Week and one of the opportunities for our students to get involved in and show their school spirit.
Every year, Powder Puff gets bigger and better. Congratulations to all the coaches and students for giving of their time and energy in order to continue this tradition. Thank you for encouraging our students and remaining positive role models throughout the event. The level of sportsmanship and camaraderie was wonderful to see amongst the spectators, cheerleaders, coaches and players. If you have never been to this annual event, make sure you put it on your calendar for next year.
In the end, it does not matter who wins or loses but that they had the courage to show up and play. Studies have shown that girls who play sports do better in school, learn teamwork and goal-setting skills, and build self-confidence. Furthermore, exercise is good for your health and for reducing stress. But on Friday, there were champions who were crowned....
Congratulations to Coach Ron Rigney and the Senior girls for winning the Championship. They played well and beat the Sophomores in the championship game. This is Coach Rigney's first year and he has reportedly set a goal to join the incomparable, Coach Juan Romero, in the LWTHS Powderpuff coach hall of fame!
Teachers, thank you for always giving of your time to provide learning opportunities for students beyond the school day.

The books cost $20, and the profit goes directly to the Class of 2019 to help offset the cost of senior year expenses. Feel free to email me if you would like a book, and I will have one delivered to you.
Thank you for your support!
Coaches' Corner
Whoever’s doing most of the talking is doing most of the learning. Corollary: Whoever’s asking most of the questions is also doing most of the learning.
The ten-dollar word for this is constructivist learning, in which the students “construct” their understanding of complex concepts.
What can this look like?
In a conventional high school math class, a teacher might introduce a word problem or case study in which students need to determine an algorithm/equation/formula to figure out how many solar panels are needed to power a greenhouse drip irrigation system. Small groups of students would list the known and unknown variables, discuss possible solutions, and condense them to formulas they could explain to others. Once the class has shared their thinking and strengthened it with helpful feedback, the teacher would then provide the “textbook” formula that aligns, more or less, to the thinking they had developed on their own.
In a less conventional class, say, Mr. Meyers’ Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, & Heating Technology program, students often begin the day by drawing a labeled diagram of the complete refrigeration cycle. They then explain the process to another student or the instructor. Once they’ve had a chance to resolve any misunderstandings, they move to the shop, where they practice wiring and brazing. Each group of students problem-solves via communication. They’re talking to each other about ideas, solutions, and questions that occur to them in the applying phase. The students are asking the questions, and their questions are authentic.
Renowned teacher and author Kylene Beers puts this in terms of monologic and dialogic talk. Monologic talk is teacher-centered and often contrived, whereas dialogic talk is student-centered and authentic. Here’s a chart that explains this succinctly:

Healthy throughout the Holidays referenced by Healthy Living Made Simple Nov./Dec. 2017

SELF principle
Set yourself up for success!
- S - SLEEP: Get at least seven hours and try to wake and go to bed at the same time every day.
- E - EXERCISE: Get 30 minutes a day, preferably in the morning to kick-start your metabolism.
- L - LOVE: Feel Gratitude for everything you have, do and give.
- F - FOOD: Vegetables and lean protein; aim for less processed foods this month.
Helpful tip: Be Mindful when you are eating especially during the holidays. However, “if you eat unhealthy food, you don’t have to beat yourself up about it,” Hashmi days. “Most of the diseases in life don’t occur because you had one big, bad family meal. They occur because of years of unhealthy behavior. When people beat themselves up over one mistake it jeopardizes their success.” Part of healthy living is happiness and joy!
