"Metals 2" Makes Come Back Decade Later
For the first time in 10 years, Metals 2 was offered at Widefield High School this semester. Metals 2 further develops a student's knowledge and skill of metalworking principles and procedures learned from the Metals 1 course. As a demonstration of those skills, each student is required to complete a self-designed and constructed project. Tye Jones, instructor, shared a couple of student's final projects this semester:
- The first is senior Austin "Bubba" Charles with his American flag art. It was created as a gift for his father who is retiring this summer after 25 years of military service.
The 4 foot-wide flag is plasma cut from 14 gauge sheet metal and is laid over 1"x10" pine boards biscuit jointed together and stained a dark walnut. - The second is junior Gabe DeSantos with his table. Gabe rolled the 3-foot diameter edge ring and MIG welded 14 gauge expanded metal to create the table surface. Beneath, 2"x2" square tubing provides both the cross support and the legs.
