A message to MRHS families...
Dear Monomoy Families,
We take academic learning time seriously at MRHS and ask you to partner with us to help reduce interruptions to the classrooms. Here's how you can help:
- PLEASE Limit early dismissals to absolutely necessary ones. Receiving a text from your student that they want to be picked up early does not qualify as necessary.
- Help your student prepare for the next day so lunches, laptops, sports equipment, etc. don't need to be dropped off/ picked up. We cannot page students from class to pick up belongings.
- Is your student feeling sick? They need to go see the school nurse. The nurse will help them feel better or facilitate a call home when necessary.
- We can no longer interrupt a class to deliver a message to a student. Please communicate last minute messages directly with your student. If it's an absolute emergency, you will be asked the details and we will do our best to help.
Thank you for your support!

PSAT 9 and PSAT/NMSQT SCORE REPORTS AND INTERPRETATION
Students should now have received their scores via e-mail from the College Board. Information can be found on the Guidance Website for review to help your child interpret their scores. MRHS, as a whole, did quite well in most cases surpassing state and national averages! Juniors are encouraged to sign-up for a Spring 2019 SAT. Students should see their counselor for more information.
COMING ATTRACTIONS:
There are two major initiatives that will begin sometime after winter break for juniors and their parents. First, we will host an evening presentation on the College Application Process. This will be followed up with formally scheduled 45 minute meetings with each junior and their family. This “planning team” meeting will look at the specific college/career plan for each student as MRHS counselors have set a goal to insure that ALL graduates are career or college ready! More information to follow.

Athletics Weekly Summary
Week of: December 10th - 14th
Written by: Caroline Howard
My my! It seems to me certain shark fans just keep coming back for more! And I must say, I don’t mind at all! A big week of sports came to the Shark tank, and our school couldn’t be more happy about it! So, grab some holiday treats and some cocoa, and away we go-go!
Most people’s Saturdays start off with no obligations or alarms, and when they finally do decide to get up---it is only to grab their coffee and relax. But, what fun would that be? Our Cape Cod Furies (the girls hockey team consisting of athletes from Monomoy, Nauset, and Cape Cod Tech) kicked off their Saturday with preparing for their big game against the Barnstable Red Raiders. The Furies sure proved to be their name, as they were undoubtedly fierce throughout the whole game. Despite their best efforts, the Red Raiders stepped in for the win, leaving the scoreboard reading 5-1. Nice effort gals!
Shortly after, the Boys Hockey team--also known as the Monarchs(the combined team of Monomoy and Mashpee athletes)-- faced off against their rival, the Nauset Warriors. Boy what a game the Sharks played! The team seemed to work as a cohesive unit and passed the puck with passion! Enough “p’s” for you folks? Me too. Anyways, the Boys, in spite of their solid effort, fell to the Warriors with the final score of 3-1. Way to play the whole game boys!
Our Winter Sports continued into the week and sparked the Boys and Girls Basketball season openers! On Tuesday, Boys Basketball started us off with a nail-biting game! Subtle is NOT in this teams vocabulary this season people! The Boys played against Martha’s Vineyard and proved to be strong. This game was so tight it continued into overtime, where our Sharks grabbed the win. The score when the final buzzer rang was 79-69! Wow! A warning to the other Cape League teams: Watch out! These boys are hungry for victory!
Also on Tuesday was our Girls Basketball season opener against Martha’s Vineyard. A smooth ferry ride over to the Vineyard had these girls excited to play! Interestingly enough, this team only has three seniors (Caitlin Daley, Erin Starkey, and Aleidy Rodriguez-Manaya)! Other than these three superior competitors, the team is very young and ready to learn! But anyways, as the final buzzer of the game rang, the Girls fell to the Vineyarders 32-21! Nice try girls! You’ll get them next time!
As Wednesday came around, the Boys Hockey team had their first home game. The Monarchs hit the ice against SJP and it proved to be a nerve-racking game. Heck, you would’ve thought you were in Lake Placid arena in 1980! But these Boys don’t need a miracle, they just use their talent and pride of being a Shark! The end result of the game was 2-1, and the Monarchs grabbed their well deserved win! Way to skate boys!
Those weren’t the only Sharks on the ice! The Cape Cod Furies faced off against Pembroke in a tough battle that left the Furies with a loss. But, you should all know that these Furies are in it for the long haul and assure you that there are many more games to play! Wahooooo!!!!
On Thursday, Girls Basketball dunked a big win over Falmouth Academy 40-31! These Girls played their full 32 minutes on the court, and worked as a powerful team. Falmouth Academy’s efforts proved to be no match against the Sharks--who set their pace for the season. Big plays by Mackenzie Balfore (9th grade) being strong downlow at the hoop, Melissa Velasquez (8th grade) who hit two 3-pointers, Caroline DiGiovanni(9th grade) with outstanding defense and multiple steals, and Maggie Dever(10th grade) being a fierce point guard! Way to go Girls! Put that game in the record books!
Now, everyone check their planners for tonight, and cross out anything you had going on! Why you might ask? Well, the Boys Basketball team plays a BIG game against the Nauset Warriors at 7 o’clock! Come early and grab a seat in the Shark Tank!
That is all I have for you today folks--but, have I ever failed you? Please say no. Next week I will be back in action and have more reports for all of you Shark fans! For now, my name is Caroline Howard and Go Sharks!

Shark Shoutout...
- Thank you to the entire Visual and Performing Arts department for taking students on an outstanding trip to New York City. From museums to shows to workshops, the students were engaged and learned so much about how the arts enrich our lives. Thanks to each of you for volunteering your time, expertise, and caring to help 36 students an unforgettable learning experience. -Ms. Rachel Barnes
- I want to thank Emily Jutras for being an extraordinary colleague. She always takes the time to assess situations critically and act in the best interests of the students and school community. Her wonderful sense of humor is appreciated by students and teachers alike. At a time of year that many people find difficult she soldiers on with grace and purpose and brings everyone along with her. -Ms. Rachel Barnes
- Special holiday shark shoutouts! To Rose Richard, for sharing holiday sheet music for us to play at the upcoming staff party. Also, my thanks to Mr. Gill, English teacher with tech chops, for helping me to begin using the Turnitin program to improve my feedback to students on their writing. Thanks to Ms. Ferro for working to make communications work more smoothly. I'm grateful also to Ms. Lindsay Ginnetty, our new guidance counselor, as she gets up to speed with the many students on her caseload, the computer software and all the staff that she has to work with to get her difficult job done. -Mr. Matt Brown
- Shout out to every Shark who donated socks, toys, wrapping paper, tape, and gift cards to the Chatham Children's Fund and the Harwich Children's Fund this week. - Ms. Liz Hoff
